Rare and Antiquarian Books

XVIth Century Books

In addition to the many rare and collectible modern books available on Biblio, we are also proud to present our booksellers' collection of antiquarian books printed in the 16th Century. Many of these featured books are printed in Italian, French, and Spanish, and many of them contain intricate and very rare illustrations. There was a greater variety in how books were bound, so many of the books offered here are bound in leather or cloth, which adds to their value and scarcity. Many books and ephemera printed in the 1500's are unique and one of a kind, and many contain fascinating glimpses into the cultures and lives of those present in that tumultuous period of history. Because of their age and delicacy, these books are quite fragile and require great care when handling. Be sure to read the book descriptions carefully and feel free to contact the bookseller directly should you have any questions about treatment or preservation, as you want to protect your investment as much as possible.

SANDRAS DE COURTILZ, GATIEN, "Memoires de Mr d'Artagnan" 1 tome, Cologne 1700– 1701. First edition. Very good.
Very rare édition originale de 1700. Very rare first edition of this interesting biography that inspired Alexandre Dumas two his famous 'The Three Musketeers'. Never seen before binding (complete, the three books) in one compartment, full leather richly gilt. A beautiful book. RARE. VERY GOOD.

BASILEAE: APUD NIC. EPISCOPIUM IUN., 1558. In 16. Dim. 17x12 cm. Pp. 32 (n.n.)+350+2 (n.n.). Numerose note manoscritte all'interno. Marca editoriale all'ultima carta. Titolo manoscritto al taglio inferiore. Opera collazionata e risultata completa. Legatura in pergamena. Non comune. Copertina in piena pergamena con… Read More

The Hermit:

Description:
A charming early publication of a popular tale relating a fictitious British hermit's escape and life on a deserted island off the coast of Mexico. The book remained anonymous until 1727 when a rare edition containing a dedication signed Peter Longueville was discovered and to whom the writing is now attributed. This publication is a seventh edition printed in London for the Booksellers. The first fly page is handwritten "Levi Willis His Book 1776", followed by a titled engraving then another hand printed notation reading "Levi Willis His Book Jan 14, 1815".Some believe this book (which was probably first published in the late 1600's) was the inspiration for Robinson Crusoe -- there are enough similarities to give validity to this theory. This may be one of the oldest surviving copies

Description:
Basel: Johannes Froben, March 1519. The rare first edition of the enlarged annotations in a separate volume. A scholar's copy annotated with the Hebrew learning of Sebastian Münster. Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (c. 1466-1536), a Dutch humanist, Catholic priest, and scholar, was one of the most influential Renaissance figures. A professor of divinity and Greek, Erasmus wrote, taught and travelled, meeting with Europe's foremost scholars. A prolific author, Erasmus wrote on subjects of both ecclesiastic and general human interest. The first printed New Testament in the original Greek including Erasmus's Latin translation and his annotations appeared in Basel in 1516. Erasmus had already begun revising his text during the production of that publication. Moreover, he augmented his immense scholarly annotations considerably, which resulted in the publication of the Annotationes as a separate volume to accompany the Novum Testamentum; both volumes appeared together in 1519. It was especially this… Read More
