FAULKNER, William (1897-1962)

New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith, 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-. First Printing, First State, with magenta and gray abstract figured end papers. 8vo: [4],380pp. Publisher's ribbed magenta paper over boards, gray cloth spine stamped in magenta, top edge stained deep gray to black. About Fine (and probably unread), with minor bumping to spine ends. Absent the scarce dust jacket. Petersen A8.2. Connolly (Modern Movement) 69. Agnew, p. 36. Coan, p. 58. Witham, p. 306. Hanna 1164. "Sanctuary, published 9 February 1931, is the sixth in order of publication of Faulkner's nineteen novels, and his fourth about Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi . . . Arguably his most pessimistic novel, and perhaps his most cynical as well, its sensational subject matter bootlegging, rape, murder, sex, prostitution, two murder trials, a lynching, and an execution made it Faulkner's first best seller, and, in literary circles at least, made him famous, if not infamous." (Literary Encyclopedia) "A formal and stylistic tour de force." (Time 100) N. B. SANCTUARY

Faulkner, William

New York: Jonathan Cape & Harrison Smith. Good+ in Fair dust jacket. 1931. First Edition. Hardcover. 1st edition with the scarce Dust Jacket. Book is in original 1/4 gray cloth with dark maroon decorated paper boards (many describe this as red cloth). Spine stamping in red. Top edge stained dark gray. Binding is very tight, spine shows a bit of wear at the ends. Darkening in some areas of the exterior french joint, looks like maybe something during manufacturing. Board edges showing some wear. Bottom of the front of the text block shows what appears to be some ink staining, again looks more like a production problem as it's exactly the same color as the top edge coloring. Interior pages unmarked, clean and bright. Dust jacket has the $2.50 price at the front, $3.00 price on the rear, both trimmed a off slightly, again likely during the production process as the jacket is the correct height to fit the book. Top jacket edge is chipped, more so on the spine ends, also somewhat darkened/soiled, 2 inch closed tear along the jacket spine at the bottom. Overall a worn but reasonable copy with a DJ. Reasonably priced to sell, condition noted. ; 8vo; 380 pages .

William Faulkner

New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1931. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 1st Printing 1 Copyright date 1931, first edition, first printing. Bound in red paper-covered boards with a grey cloth spine, this antique first printing has a black-tinted top edge. Sanctuary is the sixth novel by the American author William Faulkner, about the rape and abduction of a well-bred Mississippi college girl, Temple Drake, during the Prohibition era. It is considered one of his more controversial works, given its theme of rape. First published in 1931, it was Faulkner's commercial and critical breakthrough, establishing his literary reputation. It is said Faulkner claimed it was a "potboiler", written purely for profit, but this has been debated by scholars and Faulkner's own friends. The novel provided the basis for the films The Story of Temple Drake (1933) and Sanctuary (1961). Faulkner later wrote Requiem for a Nun (1951) as a sequel to Sanctuary. This antique book shows well with some indications of age and wear, including mild shelfwear with light soiling and wear to the spine. The binding and text block are sound. Text is clear and crisp through mild age toning to clean pages.
