Irving studied at the Institute of European Studies in Vienna in 1963 and Bears was written between 1965 and 1967 based largely on Irving’s understanding of the city and its rebellious youth of the sixties.

Dyed top edge, which has faded irregularly. Two slightly elevated, long thin areas on front cover, which are easier to feel than to see. Two specks on front edge of spine, long wrinkle at rear edge of spine, which is also slightly rubbed. Very slight wear/soil at tail of spine. Wrinkle on rear endpaper near the spine. Small area on same which appears to be sightly thinned. Jacket flaps once pasted to endpapers, and flaps still have small areas of darkenening from same, and have been neatly reinforced along the free edges of the flaps with strips of white paper. Four very tiny, very faint tan specks of foxing to bottom edge. Jacket is very lightly wrinkled at the lower edge of the front panel and on the spine, and is clean and bright. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/Very Good.
