Kipling, Rudyard

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1899. Author's ink signature on India paper and mounted to title-page, most likely clipped from a letter as the signature is preceded by a typed "Sincerely yours". Pp. [xii], 272, [2] - publ. adverts., includes half-title with swastika device to verso, title-page with red frame and rules. Crimson publisher's cloth with gilt Ganesha rondel to upper cover, gilt spine lettering, top edge gilt. From the library of Julius H. Griffith (1865-1936), friend of Kipling and fellow student at United Services College (U.S.C.). He is the father of Canadian artist Julius Griffith, with his ink signature, dated Oct. 1899, to front free endpaper. Small newspaper clipping from The Globe Nov. 1899, tipped to front free endpaper discussing various family's service in the army. On the verso of free endpaper, Griffith has created a handwritten Character list of names from the book and who they represent in real life, for example, "Stalky" is Major-General L.C. Dunsterville, "Hartopp" is H.A. Evans, "M'Turk" is G.C. Beresford, and "Beetle" is Kipling. Tipped-on to the rear free endpaper is a reproduction of a portrait photo on glossy paper, captioned: "Stalky and Co. To-day". According to handwritten note in left margin: "From the Kipling Journal No. 36. This must have been taken in 1935, abt 53 years after they had left the U.S. Coll. Westward Ho." and in the right margin: "I received this the day we heard of Ki [sic] operation. The Sun Newspaper reproduced it. [initialed] J.H.G.", Beneath the photo are handwritten, the names of each person: Beresford; Kipling, died 18/1/36; Gen' Dunsterville. A few insightful margin notes in pencil, obviously from one who had been there. A unique and personal clean, bright copy. (Stewart 195; Livingston 216). SIGNED BY KIPLING. First English Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.. Small Octavo.

STALKY & CO

Kipling, Rudyard

1899. [the Publisher to Major Pond] Toronto: George N. Morang & Co., 1899. Original dark green cloth with Viking longboat design in black. First Canadian Edition -- technically, the Canadian issue of the first American edition, which was published in this binding by Doubleday & McClure ten days before Macmillan's UK edition. These nine hilarious tales of school life (of the mischievous Stalky, Beetle and McTurk) are based on Kipling's own days at the United Services College. Included are eight illustrations by L. Raven Hill, which are not in the UK edition. American sheets were bound up with a Morang title leaf, and the binding was altered only to read "MORANG" at the foot of the spine (some Canadian copies were put up in red wrappers). One little oddity of this Canadian edition is that Kipling's prefatory poem here follows the Contents and Illustrations leaves, whereas in the American edition (and in the UK edition), the poem precedes those leaves. This is a bright copy, fine except for very light rubbing at the corners. Richards A144 (note). Provenance: this is an inscribed presentation copy from the publisher to the American literary agent and lecture-tour impresario, ["Major"] James P. Pond. The front free endpaper bears the inked inscription "Mr J. B. Pond With the kind regards of the Publishers Geo N. Morang & Co.", and the opposing paste-down bears Pond's less-than-modest bookplate. Pond was the "major" American literary agent of that era.

KIPLING, Rudyard (1865-1936)

London: Macmillan, 1899. [Boarding school stories] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[xii]; 272; [2] publisher's advertisements. Recent red half morocco over red cloth sides, top edge gilt, raised bands and gilt titles to spine. Original cloth front board and spine bound in at rear. Infrequent thumbing and spotting. Binding is tight and presentable. Near Fine. Kipling's boarding school stories; however - like boarding schools themselves - not for the faint-hearted, showing something of the truth of Hobbes' maxim that "man to man is an errant wolf". Teddy Roosevelt, himself no shrinking violet, characterised it as presenting "hardly a single form of meanness which it does not seem to extol". All of this serves the characters well in the end, thus vindicating the imperial principles on which it is so compelling based.

New York: Doubleday & McClure, 1899. This episodic novel of life in an English boarding school was based upon Kipling's own experiences. It was originally serialized in "Windsor" Magazine, but does not include the first story of the series. In 2004, a manuscript containing additional Stalky material was found. Here is a Near Fine copy of the First American Edition, in the distinctive binding adopted by Kipling's American publishers: ribbed green decorative cloth binding; ruled, and with a blindstamped image of a dhow at sea on the front cover; title and author in gilt. The spine repeats the theme and has titles in gilt. Clean text; 310 pages. The top edge is gilt, others are rough-cut. Hints of bumping, and some light rubbing to the crown and foot of the spine. Rudyard Kipling

26 - London - Macmillan and Co., 1899 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. First edition.. A two volume set of Rudyard Kipling first editions. Comprising of Stalky and Co. as well as Debits and Credits, the works here show the breadth of Kipling's abilities, with the former book a novel and the latter a collection of short stories, poems and scenes for a play. Both volumes are decorated with Kipling's signature elephant to the boards, a nod to his time in, and love for, India, something also related to in the Hindu symbols found to the endpages. Stalky and Co. features the bookplate of one G. W. Bell. Condition: In decorative cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally quite smart, there is some wear to the boards, extremities and joints, as well as some sunning to spines. The hinge of Stalky and Co. is tender. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound, although there is some light strain in places, and are bright and clean throughout, aside from the odd instance of spotting throughout. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

Stalky & Co.

Rudyard Kipling

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1929. Full leather. This is a beautifully preserved copy of the leather-bound “Pocket Edition” of 1929. The book measures 7 x 4.5 inches, bound in dark red leather with blind rule borders on both covers, a gilt elephant illustration on the front cover, extensive gilt decoration on the spine, a dark red ribbon page marker, and gilt top edge. The dust jacket, printed and illustrated in red on cream stock, repeats the volume’s front cover elephant design. Condition is beautifully fine in a very good dust jacket. The leather binding is pristine, with no wear or flaws. The contents remain bright, as does the gilt top edge. We note fraying to the end of the ribbon marker, trivial spotting confined to the fore edge, and a brief, inked gift inscription on the front free endpaper dated “2nd Feb 1941”. Mild differential toning of the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms what the lovely binding already testifies – that this copy has spent life protected by the dust jacket. The jacket is in very good condition, bright, though with fractional loss to the spine ends and corners and some modest soiling and staining to the lower spine and lower front cover. The rear face and flaps advertise other Kipling works and the lower front face explicitly states that this is the “Pocket Edition Leather”. The jacket is now protected beneath a removable, clear archival cover. Kipling's Stalky & Co. was first published in 1899 (following serialization in the Windsor Magazine). It is a collection of linked short stories, some including the charismatic Stalky character in later life. The character Beetle, one of the main trio, is based partly on Kipling himself. Stalky is based on Lionel Dunsterville, M'Turk is based on George Charles Beresford, Mr. King is based on William Carr Crofts, and the school is based on the United Services College. More Stalky & Co. tales appeared in magazines and later in collections: "Regulus" in A Diversity of Creatures (1917); "Stalky" in Land and Sea Tales for Scouts and Guides (1923); "The United Idolators" and "The Propagation of Knowledge" in Debits and Credits (1926); and "The Satisfaction of a Gentleman" (with the others) in The Complete Stalky & Co. (1929, the same year as the publisher’s leather Pocket Edition). Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English poet, short-story writer, and novelist chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism, tales and poems of British soldiers in India, and his tales for children.  Despite this reputation, Kipling’s extraordinary body of work “eludes all labels in its range and variety… Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence, it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: ‘Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures.’” (ODNB)  Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907.  Born in India and educated in England, Kipling could not afford to attend either Oxford or Cambridge University and instead returned to India to work as a newspaper editor and writer, which proved formative.  He returned to England in 1889, later living in the United States and South Africa before finally settling in England. Owing mostly to ill health, Kipling's production of original work diminished in the years between the end of the First World War and his death.

In publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt elephant motif to upper board. Top edge gilt. Mostly clean within, endpapers browned, cloth shows some general wear and handling. Very good. An inexpensive copy of the first edition; Kipling's famous tales about adolescent boys at a British boarding school, complete with amateur skullduggery and a fair amount of giddy jesting, japery and your run of the mill sadistic bullying that obviously served to make the British Empire great; throw them to the Jesuits I say. Stewart [195]. BMC No.1 [1984]; 'Edwardian Children's Books'.
