STONEGROUND GHOST TALES

SWAIN, E. G.

1912. SWAIN, E. G. THE STONEGROUND GHOST TALES compiled from the recollections of the Reverend Roland Batchel, Vicar of the parish. Cambridge [England]: W. Heffer & Sons Ltd., 1912. First edition. Octavo. [viii], 187 pp. Publisher's pictorial blue cloth binding, with front board and spine stamped in black. It shows general wear all over (some scuffing and spotting, etc.) and is faded on spine. The opening and closing text leaves are foxed just along their fore-edges; otherwise the text is clean. The bookblock is overopened in a few places and is weak at those points, but is still soundly in its cloth binding. Early ownership marks and a small bookseller's label (Lauriat's of Boston, MA) on ffep. Edmund Gill Swain (1861 - 1938) was an author and a chaplain of King's College, Cambridge, and a colleague and contemporary of the scholar and author M. R. James, and a regular member of the select group to whom James delivered his famous annual Christmas Eve reading of a ghost story composed specially for the occasion. This collection of nine ghost stories is Swain's most famous and is dedicated James. A very good copy overall.

THE STONEGROUND GHOST TALES

Swain, E G.

The Oleander Press, 2013. Paperback. Near Fine. In excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlig hting. The spine remains undamaged. The Stoneground Ghost Tales are an atmospheric collection of unsettling sup ernatural stories, first published in 1912 by E.G. Swain who had been chapl ain of King's College, Cambridge, and was a colleague and friend of M.R. Ja mes. These charmingly ghoulish tales, written by Swain as a tribute to his friend, have been favourites of ghost story fans for many years. The nine t ales, each narrated in the Jamesian manner, are, however, rather milder in tone and regularly incorporate a playful humour not often found in James' w ork. The stories are set in and around Stanground, on the edge of the Fens, where Swain was vicar for many years and recount the adventures of the gen ial, ghost-hunting rector Rev. Roland Batchel. Who is the alluring young woman that appears, tearfully pleading, in Mr Bat chel's study - only to disappear the very next minute, with no clue as to h er purpose? Why is a previously unblemished photograph now displaying a man "with an indescribably horrible, suffering face"? Is it possible that a mi rror could have "the power of retaining indefinitely the light which fell u pon it"? And if so, what horrors might one see? And what might be the blood y repercussions of ignoring the warning, "MOVE NOT THIS STAKE" even after 2 00 years? The answers to these and more eerie mysteries are to be found in Oleander's reprint of this classic horror text, The Stoneground Ghost Tales which, having been out of print for many years, are now available once more.
