The African Queen

By Forester, C S

The African Queen is the story of a jerry-rigged attack on a German gunboat in Central Africa during the early days of World War I. An important subplot is the love story between the Charlie Allnutt, captain of the small launch named The African Queen, and Rose Sayer, the sister and companion of an Anglican missionary who dies in the first part of the novel. Rose's personality is the driving force of the attack, and the novel. Interestingly, the original UK edition has a happy ending, with the couple surviving to be married, but in the US edition, Allnutt dies during the attack.

First edition identification and notes

The first U.K. edition can bring over $15,000 for a book in excellent condition. Wear to the edges of pages and the boards of the book is common, but the original printing holds up well. It should be noted that the US edition is known to be much more likely to have suffered damage, and is considered fragile. Copies of the first US edition in good shape are very rare, and can command several thousand (U.S.) dollars if they are without substantial flaws.

Other collectible or notable editions

The book inspired a classic well known film of the same name starring Humphrey Bogart and Katherine Hepburn in the major roles. The popularity of the movie contributes to the continuing interest in the book, and early copies of this title are highly sought after by collectors.

The African Queen.

FORESTER, C. S.

London: Michael Joseph,, 1950. Inscribed to the agent responsible for the film Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles to spine and front board in blue. With the dust jacket. Spine just a little rolled, faint partial toning to free endpapers. An excellent copy in the rubbed and nicked jacket with fraying at the ends of the spine panel. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to the literary agent responsible for the film adaptation on the front free endpaper, "To Shirley, - a copy of a book which is as old as our friendship but not nearly as precious to me. With love from C. S. Forester". Shirley Palmer Collier was a well-known Los Angeles literary agent who began her career as a silent film actress, starring in at least 23 films between 1923 and 1934. She married the author and Hollywood screenwriter John Collier in 1936 and maintained strong links to the movie industry throughout her career. It was in all likelihood Shirley Collier who introduced The African Queen to Horizon Pictures as a potential film, and Collier's then ex-husband served as one of the screenwriters. The novel was originally published in 1935 and the completed film, starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, premiered in 1951, the year after this edition was published. Forester must have obtained this copy to present to Collier as thanks for her role in the film's birth. A superb association.
