The Beautiful and Damned

Fitzgerald, F. Scott

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A lovely, Fine copy of the book in a bright nearly Fine dust jacket. Slight wear at the crown, one short tear on the rear panel (no loss) and minor rubbing. First issue book and jacket with the title in white (outlined in black). Entirely unrestored. Housed in a custom clamshell case. "Set in an era of intoxicating excitement and ruinous success, changing manners and challenged morals, F. Scott Fitzgerald's second novel chronicles the lives of Harvard-educated Anthony Patch and his beautiful, willful wife Gloria. This bitingly ironic story eerily foretells the fate of the author and his own wife Zelda -- from its giddy romantic beginnings to its alcohol-fueled demise. A portrait of greed, ambition, and squandered talent, The Beautiful and the Damned depicts an America embarked on the greatest spree in history, a world Fitzgerald saw with clear eyes...One of his best known works, Gertrude Stein correctly predicted it 'will be read when many of his well-known contemporaries are forgotten'" (Wolff). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

The Beautiful and Damned

FITZGERALD, F. Scott (1896-1940)

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-. True First Printing (without the publisher's seal on the copyright page or the concluding advertisements on pp. 451-452 of later printings) of the author's second novel. 8vo; [10], 449, [1]pp. Publisher's dark blue-green linen-like cloth, the spine lettered gilt, the upper cover blind-stamped with the title and author, the fore-edge untrimmed. A just about Fine copy (lacking the dust jacket), save for offsetting to the end papers and faintly discernible pencil erasures to the front fly leaf. Bruccoli A8.1.a. The Beautiful and Damned, in cut and edited form, first appeared in seven installments in Metropolitan magazine, from September 1921 to March 1922. The book, according to Bruccoli, came out on 4 March 1922, in a first impression of 20,600 copies. It went through two more printings that year, for a total of 50,000 copies. After the spectacular success of Fitzgerald's first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), he struck out in a new direction, presenting in The Beautiful and Damned a more sparing, focused narrative, relying largely on an omniscient narrator. "Its style," according to the Literary Encyclopedia, "moves towards that integration of romantic and modernist elements which will come to such dazzling fruition in his next novel, The Great Gatsby." Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

The Beautiful and Damned

FITZGERALD, F. SCOTT

New York: Scribners, 1922. Second printing. This was the office file copy of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s agent, Harold Ober Associates, with their printed label on the front pastedown. A good to very good copy with a few minor spots to the front board and some slight darkening and rubbing to the spine and a bit of slight fraying to the top and bottom of the spine and corners without dust jacket. Harold Ober (1881 - 1951) was one of America’s most respected and successful literary agents. He represented such distinguished authors as William Faulkner, and is perhaps best known for both his professional and personal association with F. Scott Fitzgerald. Ober’s relationship with Fitzgerald was particularly close and supportive, and like any complex alliance, it suffered through occasional bouts of conflict and contention. Over the years Ober played an integral role in the cultivation of Fitzgerald’s career, offering professional counsel and financial assistance, often giving him advances against unsold stories. In turn, Fitzgerald dedicated his book, Taps At Reveille, to Ober. After Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda was institutionalized, Harold and Anne Ober stepped in as virtual foster parents to the Fitzgerald’s young daughter, Scottie. When Fitzgerald died suddenly in Hollywood, CA while working on The Last Tycoon, his companion Sheilah Graham’s first call was to Ober, with whom Scottie was staying, informing him of the sad news. Ober then called Zelda Fitzgerald in Montgomery, AL. The Obers continued their affection and support of Scottie, including lending her money so that she could complete her education at Vassar. All in all, Fitzgerald and Ober were clearly a dynamic literary force, and without question helped to bring modern American literature forward with intelligence, commitment, and style.

Scott Fitzgerald. 1922 1st edition, 2nd state ("Published March, 1922" on copyright page with Scribner's colophon and 2 pages of advertisements at the back of the book); Charles Scribner's Sons; New York. This is Fitzgerald's second novel, which explores and portrays New York cafe society and the American Eastern elite during the Jazz Age before and after "The Great War" and in the early 1920's - a cautionary tale of reckless abandon and squandered talent. At the back of the book are ads for "This Side of Paradise" (Fitzgerald's debut novel) and "Flappers and Philosophers" (Fitzgerald's first collection of short stories). Condition: Clean covers and spine; sharp corners; bright gilt lettering on the spine. Tight binding. No cracks. No loose pages. The text pages are in great condition - clean with no writing or stains; the contents page and the following blank page each have a tear at the outer edge resulting from an attempt to separate them (the pages are still attached half-way down the outer edge); tiny foxing spot at the top edge of pages 1-8, as well as on the front pastedown and end paper. The inner and top edges of the rear pastedown and end paper have some very light foxing (barely noticeable). Some small stain spots at the top edge of the text block.
