THE CIDER HOUSE RULES

Irving, John

Franklin Center, PA: The Franklin Library, 1985. Renowned author's sixth novel, the story of an orphanage in Maine, Dr. Larch who helps young women who come to the orphanage either to leave an orphan or have an abortion, their choice, and Homer Wells, an orphan who grows up as an understudy to the doctor. John Irving signed very few of his early novels, but with this one he broke out of the box. There are three different signed limited editions: A Morrow Publisher's edition of 250 signed copies in a slipcase, a Book of the Month Club signed limited edition of 795 copies, and the Franklin Mint signed limited of unknown quantity. Which is the true first? I believe it is the Franklin Mint edition who entered into contracts with several novelists in the mid-eighties for the rights to signed limited editions. Irving's next book, A Prayer for Owen Meany, is likewise published in a FM signed limited edition that precedes the trade edition. As further proof, Irving has written a "special message for the first edition" that acts as a preface to the FM edition of The Cider House Rules. Beautifu copy, tightly bound in full leather with three bands on the spine, with a ribbon book mark. Signed by the author on the first blank page following the front free endpaper.. Signed Limited First Edition. Full-Leather. Fine/No DJ as Issued.

Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.: William Morrow & Co, 1985. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Classic novel set in early twentieth-century rural Maine and centered around Dr. Wilbur Larch--orphanage director, ether addict, and abortionist--and his favorite orphan, who is never adopted. Stated first trade edition. First printing with correct full number line sequence. This is a beautiful, apparently unread copy with no writing, marks, underlining, or bookplates. No remainder marks. Spine is tight and crisp. Boards are flat and true, and the corners are square. The only flaw to the book is a small area (1" or so) of very, very light soiling to the upper textblock edge. Dust jacket is not price-clipped and shows minimal wear/scuffing. There is a 1/4" tear on the lower right corner of the front cover with some associated delamination.
