The Diary Of Samuel Pepys

By Pepys, Samuel

Samuel Pepys was born in London in 1633 and died there in 1703. From 1661 to 1669, he kept a quotidian record of what he saw and heard and read, and whom he met. It is his only literary heritage.

Richard Le Gallienne (1866-1947) was born in England. After serving as literary critic and contributor to the 1890s London quarterly Yellow Book, this prolific author of prose and verse took up residence in New York City. He was the father of Eva Le Gallienne.

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894), the Scottish fiction writer, essayist and poet, authored such popular classics as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys [eleven volumes, in wooden bookshelf].

Samuel Pepys, edited by R C Latham & W Matthews:

London: The Folio Society, 2003. Limited edition, complete in 11 hardback volumes, including the companion volume and the index. Each volume is 8vo (23cm by 15cm), has about 300-500 pages, and is bound in the original quarter dark brown Nigerian Goatskin with marbled paper sides by Ann Muir. The set is contained in the original wooden bookshelf. A few of the books show light signs of having been read, but this set is in excellent condition overall. Limited to 1000 numbered sets, of which this is set number 349. Of the 1000 sets, only about 720 were marbled by Ann Muir herself (later-numbered sets are widely felt to have lower-quality marbling). Not all sets were issued in the wooden bookshelf; a cheaper alternative (card slipcases) was also available, and all later-numbered sets were issued in slipcases.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys.

Pepys, Samuel

London: George Bell & Sons, 1893. Octavo, 10 volumes, bound in three quarters leather, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, top edge gilt. With Lord Braybrooke's notes, edited with additions by Henry B. Wheatley. Frontispiece portrait and other illustrations with tissue guards and folding plates. In very good condition. "Alexander conquered the world; but Pepys, with a keener, more selfish understanding of life, conquered a world for every sense" (Charles Whibley). "Pepys led a full, varied and voraciously-enjoyed life and clearly took pleasure in setting it all down in plain words. Unlike most frantically busy men, he had remarkable powers of observation" (Paul Johnson). "The bald truth about oneself, what we are all too timid to admit when we are not too dull to see it, that was what Pepys saw clearly and set down unsparingly" (Robert Louis Stevenson).
