This is the rare 1st American Edition, 1st Printing of "The Fellowship of the Ring" by J.R.R. Tolkien. 1954; Houghton Mifflin Company; Boston. The book comes with its original, correct 1st issue dust jacket as well as the fold-out color map of Middle Earth attached to the back of the book. This is one of only 1,500 copies printed. The book meets all 1st edition points:* no price listed on the dust jacket* the bottom edge of Tolkien's photo on the back of the jacket is straight (and not a "V")* the letter "d" in the word "Frodo" is clipped on the 10th line of the rear jacket flap* the following letter "o" is not nicked Condition: Clean covers and spine with no stains; very light wear to corner tips. Tight binding. No cracks. No loose pages. The text pages are in excellent condition with no writing, foxing or tears; at the outer edge of pages 201-208 is a tiny stain spot. Previous owner's label affixed to the front end paper; at the lower-right corner of this label is a light ink smudge that extends a bit onto the end paper. The map at the back of the book is in terrific condition with no stains, creases or tears - it's firmly attached and opens nicely. The dust jacket has light soiling to the back cover, tears along the top and bottom edges (notable tears at the top and bottom edges of the spine) and some tears at the hinges between the flaps and covers; "JD 500" is written in pen on the upper-left corner of the rear flap. Overall in very good condition.

The other two volumes are first U. S. Printings. The DJ on the Fellowship is only fair, with the spine missing and the flaps present but loose. DJ's on the other two volumes are very good with rubbing at the corners and some chipping to the spine ends. Price is for the set. ; 9" .

The first and second volume are first editions, fifth impressions and the third volume is the third impression. Original red cloth with gold gilt decorations and lettering stamped to the spines. Condition varies, with the first volume being near fine; the second volume has some rubbing along the edges of the boards, especially to the bottom edge and the tail of the spine; the third volume has some minor rubbing along the edges of the boards. Top edge of textblock dyed red. The third volume has the previous owner's name to the ffep; the first and third volume have a very small and discrete bookseller label on the front pastedown. The dust jackets on the first and third volume have not been price clipped; the second volume's jacket has been price clipped. A very minor amount of edgewear to the jackets. The jacket for the first edition is a sixth impression, the jacket matches the fifth impression second volume, as does the third impression of the third volume. Overall, a wonderful set in very good to near fine condition. An attractive and fairly early, mixed impression set of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy in collectible condition. These books have become a classic of fantasy literature and have also been adapted into Oscar winning films by Peter Jackson. 1957

Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, no date (1955), 1955. US issue of the 3rd UK printing (there was no US issue from the 2nd UK printing). Blue cloth gilt lettered. pp (424), colour folding map tipped to rear pastedown, made from UK sheets, Auckland address is Haddon Hall at rear. Crease along upper margin of p. 7 (manufacturing flaw) has left a soft impression to the first 11 pages, and the title leaf has another soft diagonal crease; light damp stain along bottom of rear cover; this is otherwise a fine, bright and unworn copy, no owner names. The dust jacket has very light sunning to yellow spine; rear panel has tiny nicks along top edge, and a dark damp stain to the bottom margin; the jacket is mainly fine otherwise, no chips, clips (no printed flap price), or tears, the spine and front panel showing well. The third UK printing contained 11 corrections to the 2nd UK printing, which also had JRRT's corrections to the first printing as well as a number of errors introduced by the printers, some of which remained in the text for years. The American dust jacket (art by Walter Lorraine) is entirely different from the familiar UK jacket design. The first US "edition", actually the US issue, from UK sheets, was published 21 Oct., 1954 (only 1500 copies). The present issue is the second earliest for US publication.. Hardcover. Octavo.

An octavo measuring 8 3/4 by 5 5/8 inches with a prior owner's book plate on the front paste down and offsetting to the front free end page (probably from a newspaper article having been left there too long) In a very good, price clipped dust jacket with a 1/2" deep chip at the upper edge of the spine area, an 1/8" chip at the upper fore corner of the front panel and minor chips to the remaining corners of the panels and with the spine area heavily tanned. There are numerous, tiny abrasions to the yellow colors on the front panel. The Fellowship of the Ring is the second story in Tolkien's grand work and the first in his trilogy of The Lord of the Rings. This copy was printed by the Riverside Press as noted on the title page. With in text illustrations by the author on page 59 and 333. 423 numbered pages of text followed by the fold-out map tipped-in at the rear paste down. (Hammond, p99)
