Ex-Libris plate to front pastedown. Volume 1 only. Medium cracking to hinges, with exposed netting, front board is loose. Pages have light tanning and foxing throughout. Illustrations and plates are lightly tanned with some foxing. Slight stains and markings to some pages. Boards have light shelf-wear with corner bumping. Slight crushing to spine ends. Slight stains to front board. Gilt lettering is bright and clear.

Octavo (22cm). 24 parts in 23 numbers, in original printed yellow paper wrappers; extensive ads, including several on inserted slips; 48 plates, in-text wood engravings, all by Thackeray. "Miss Galan" in contemporary ink on front wrappers of most issues; embossed stamp of Reeve's Library, Leamington on a few issues. Generally bright and whole, with minor general rubbing and external dust; the final issue with covers detached and gatherings loose, but otherwise Very Good.
Original printing of Thackeray's second major novel, published immediately after Vanity Fair; the narrator, Arthur Pendennis, reappears in The Newcomes and The Adventures of Philip. Unusual among Victorian authors, Thackeray illustrated many of his works himself. VAN DUZER 165.
