The Lord Of the Rings

By Tolkien, J R R

The Lord of the Rings is an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist and Oxford University professor J. R. R. Tolkien. The story began as a sequel to Tolkien's earlier, less complex children's fantasy novel The Hobbit (1937), but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II.

[The Lord of the Rings.] The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King.

TOLKIEN, J. R. R.

London: George Allen and Unwin,, 1954-5. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Folding maps by Christopher Tolkien at end of each volume, map entitled "A Part of The Shire" in The Fellowship of the Ring. Spines minimally cocked, slight rubbing to extremities, faint marks to top edges, small mark to fore edge of The Return of the King, light offsetting to endpapers; a very good copy in the faintly soiled jackets with browning to spines, edges, and head of front panel of The Return of the King, slight nicks to spine and fold ends, and a short closed tear to foot of front panel of The Return of the King. First editions, first impressions. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most popular works of literature in the 20th century, containing richly rendered detail of a new mythological world, not yet surpassed. The Return of the King is in the following production variant states: the third state variant with broken type and signature 4 on p. 49 (previously identified by Hammond as the first state); the second state variant of p. 281 with no gap in the middle of "Men" on the final line, and the second state dust jacket variant with reviews of the first two books to the rear flap. The textual variants within the first impression, and the priorities assigned to them, are of manufacture only; they would have been published simultaneously.

[The Lord of the Rings:]

TOLKIEN, J. R. R.

London: George Allen and Unwin,, 1954-5. 3 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in full red morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, "Eye of Sauron" to front boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a matching leather entry slipcase. Each volume has a map illustrated by the Author. A fine set. First editions, first impressions. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having a transforming impact upon the entertainment industry, from electronic games to movies.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954-1956. First American Editions. First Printings (1,500, 1,000, and 5,000 copies respectively, bound from British sheets). Three octavo volumes (22.75cm); turquoise cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spines and front covers; yellow topstains; dustjackets; [7],8-423; [8],9-352; [10],416pp + illustrated fold-out maps tipped onto rear pastedown of each volume. Fellowship: Hint of sunning to spine, upper board corners gently tapped (though still sharp), with date of "1.1.55" written in a tiny hand at lower edge of rear pastedown; Very Good+. In the correct first printing dustjacket, unpriced, with the ascender clipped on the 'd' in 'Frodo' on the tenth line on the rear flap, the following 'o' not nicked, and the lower edge of Tolkien's photograph on the rear panel cut straight across (not 'V' shaped); gentle sunning to spine, rear panel slightly dusty, with a few small nicks and short tears; an unrestored, Very Good+ or better example. Two Towers: Hint of sunning to spine, mild wear to heel, with some faint, scattered foxing to pastedowns (though fresh internally); Near Fine. In the correct first printing dustjacket, priced $5.00, with the "stripe" at upper and lower edges of front panel, and the notch in the 'r' of 'Towers;' light wear to extremities and front flap fold, with a few tiny nicks and short tears, and scattered foxing evident on verso; Very Good+. Return: Single, shallow bump to upper edge of rear board, else fresh and Fine. In the first printing dustjacket, unclipped (priced $5.00, with oversized 5 present), with two tiny nicks to upper edge and a handful of small edge tears; Near Fine. A uniformly attractive, unrestored set of Tolkien's beloved fantasy novel, basis for Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning trilogy of films. The first American printings of each title were produced in notably smaller numbers than their UK counterparts (3,000, 3,250, and 7,000 copies respectively), and attractive sets in the correct dustjackets are quite desirable. The Lord Of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of The King

Tolkien, J. R. R. (John Ronald Reuel)

London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954-1955 [1961-1962]. First editions, eleventh printing of The Fellowship of the Ring, eighth printing of The Two Towers, ninth printing of The Return of the King, with the terminal fold-out maps tipped in to each volume. An excellent set. The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy trilogy, written as the sequel to Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. It tells the story of the second attempt of the men, elves, and dwarves of Middle Earth to destroy the Dark Lord Sauron, the "Lord of the Rings." In The Hobbit, set almost 2,000 years after Sauron was initially vanquished, Hobbit Bilbo Baggins discovers Sauron's lost ring, which he used to control the inhabitants of Middle Earth vis-à-vis corrupt leaders whom he gave lesser rings to in order to gain power over them. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo leaves the ring to his nephew Frodo, who joins with a group of men, hobbits, dwarves, and elves on a quest to destroy it. In The Two Towers, Frodo and Sam continue alone on their increasingly perilous journey to destroy the ring while the remaining members of the Fellowship try to protect the realms of Middle Earth from the troops of Sauron, who continues to gain strength as Frodo brings the Ring closer. The Return of the King concludes the trilogy with the final destruction of Sauron and the reestablishment of proper order in the worlds of men and hobbits. Each volume is divided into two books and contains chapters narrated by different characters.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
