The Lost World

By Doyle, Arthur Conan

SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE was born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and began to write stories while he was a student. Over his life he produced more than thirty books, 150 short stories, poems, plays and essays across a wide range of genres. His most famous creation is the detective Sherlock Holmes, who he introduced in his first novel A Study in Scarlet (1887). This was followed in 1889 by an historical novel, Micah Clarke. In 1893 Conan Doyle published The Final Problem in which he killed off his famous detective so that he could turn his attention more towards historical fiction. However Holmes was so popular that Conan Doyle eventually relented and published The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901. The events of the The Hound of the Baskervilles are set before those of The Final Problem but in 1903 new Sherlock Holmes stories began to appear that revealed that the detective had not died after all. He was finally retired in 1927. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died on July 7, 1930.

THE LOST WORLD ..

Doyle, Arthur Conan

New York: A. L. Burt Company, Publishers, [1925].. Octavo, pp. [1-10] [1-3] 4-309 [310: blank], four inserted plates, original red-brown cloth, front and spine panels stamped in gold. Photoplay edition. Illustrated with four stills from the landmark 1925 First National silent movie directed by Harry O. Hoyt with special effects by Willis O'Brien (who later animated the creatures for King Kong). The 1925 film was a "lost" film for over 50 years. By contractual agreement, all known prints (positive and negative) were destroyed in 1929. Only a truncated 16 mm print was extant until a nearly full length print was discovered in the film archives of the Czech Republic in the 1990s. Today two restored versions exist, one a third longer than any other version with 30 minutes of footage replaced (nearly complete, and available on DVD), the other a restoration owned by Eastman Kodak (information from an article at the dvd journal website). The film was based on the first Professor Challenger story, in which the scientist and his exploring party locate a remnant of the prehistoric world on a plateau in South America. Challenger's narrative "remains the most famous of its type and has served as a model since its publication." - Anatomy of Wonder (1981) 1-63. "... written as pure entertainment, and as such it is a huge success. It stands at the very end of an era of great adventure stories, and it is the equal of anything else in its genre." - Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1270-73. Angenot and Khouri, "An International Bibliography of Prehistoric Fiction," SFS, VIII (March 1981), 43. A fine copy in nearly fine pictorial dust jacket with light wear at edges, shallow fraying with just a bit of loss at upper spine end, and tiny chip from upper front right corner tip. A sharp copy of this title, uncommon in this condition. (#148771)

The Lost World.

Doyle, Arthur Conan

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1912. First edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "robust adventure story," one of 190 large paper copies. Octavo, original cloth blindstamped with dinosaur footprints, gilt titles to the spine and front panel, pictorial endpapers, with eleven tipped-in plates with tissue guards including frontispiece portrait of Professor Challenger. In very good condition. Rare and desirable. As early as 1889, Conan Doyle mused about writing "a Rider Haggardy kind of book... dedicated to all the naughty boys of the Empire." By 1911 "he was writing it at last... inspired in part by local fossil evidences of prehistoric life"-including two fossilized iguanadon feet, a Stone Age flint arrowhead-and "by sentiments expressed at a May 1910 luncheon in honor of the Arctic explorer Robert Peary... [For] The Lost World, he turned to a barely explored region of the Amazon in South America; for as he said at Peary's luncheon, 'romance writers are a class of people who very much dislike being hampered by facts'" (Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters, 577-8). The restless, questing intellect of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle spurred him far beyond the ingenious puzzles he constructed for Sherlock Holmes. In The Lost World, Doyle, a devotee of fantastic tales of adventure and discovery, introduces his readers to Professor Challenger, an eccentric paleontologist, on his suspense-filled search for prehistoric creatures in the wilds of the Amazon. Professor Challenger's doughty troupe includes a skeptical colleague, Professor Summerlee; the cool-headed, plucky sportsman Lord John Roxton; and the narrator, the intrepid reporter Edward Malone. When their bridge to civilization collapses, the explorers find themselves marooned among dinosaurs and savage ape-people. "Despite such anachronisms as cavemen living with dinosaurs, both Challenger and the credibility of the detail strengthen the narrative, making it the classic of its type" Anatomy of Wonder. Barron, Anatomy of Wonder, 1-31; Goldscheider, Conan Doyle Bibliography, 477.

Conan Doyle, Arthur

London: George Newnes Ltd., 1912. Hardcover. black-&-white illustrations. 8vo. Two volume set bound in maroon 'pebbled' buckram with gilt rules. The stitching of both volumes has been stressed a bit, as from being opened carelessly, but there are no loose pages, or signatures. Both volumes show minor rubbing to extremities. Contents sl. shaken, but hinges & joints tight. Overall, very good. This is the complete, first appearance in print, of the famous fantasy novel, wherein the character of Prof. George Challenger is first introduced. Published in monthly parts, as the leader in the Strand Magazine, by George Newnes, Ltd., London, commencing in April, 1912, and then in consecutive monthly parts until November, 1912. The extraordinary illustrations are by Harry Rountree and the 'late Maple White' [actually ACD, using his own faked photos]. Some of these illustrations are unique to this issue. The first book edition appeared in October of the same year under the imprint of British publisher Hodder & Stoughton. A General Index precedes volume I. Both volumes have individual monthly Tables of Contents. The first volume contains pp. 363 to 720 of volume XLIII, and pp. 1 to 120 of volume XLIV. The second volume contains pp. 123 to 600 of volume XLIV. G&G A34. The complete text of each issue is included; thus many other notable stories are also set out: by P. G. Wodehouse, Morley Roberts, 'Ouida', E. Phillips Oppenheim and others.
