The Man With The Golden Gun - 1st Edition/1st Printing/1st State

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1965. First Edition; First Printing. Cloth. A rather attractive and scarce first state of the first edition in very near fine condition, minor spotting to top edge, little bumping to tips in bright dust-jacket with minor chips to edges. Only a very limited number of first state copies (said to be less than 1,000) were made with the famous golden gun embossed on the front cover prior to the design changes for quality reasons. Gilbert A13a,1.1. In custom clamshell case with leather spine; Fleming's thirteenth and last Bond novel, followed one year later by a collection of short-stories (Octopussy and The Living Daylights). A golden bullet with "007" etched in it is received by her Majesty's Secret Service. It is believed to come from Scaramanga, hired to assassinate Bond and sent to scare his new target. Basis for the James Bond movie starring Roger Moore, and Maud Adams as Bond girl Andrea Anders, the first of Adams' three Bond appearances. Christopher Lee as Scaramanga .

The Man with the Golden Gun

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover. Like New. First edition, first printing, first issue, first state with gun embossed in gilt on front cover. Near Fine with very slight lean to spine, foxing to edge of page block and a small stain to the top edge. In a Near Fine dust jacket with slight shelf wear, publisher's price intact. A fantastic copy, with very bright gilt. housed in a custom folding case. According to the publisher's archive, a mere 940 copies (from an original print run of a whopping 82,000) were blocked in gilt. The design was quickly scrapped in favor of a more economical plain front cover, as the amount of gilt required for the golden pistol was rather cost-prohibitive. Gilbert A13a, 1.1.

The Man With The Golden Gun.

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition, first state with the golden gun embossed on the front board. Octavo, original black boards, green patterned endpapers. The publisher set out to publish the embossed gun but the cost proved prohibitive to continue, so the gilt-stamping was ceased, and the remaining copies were published with plain front boards. "This issue with the golden gun on the casing is the rarest, by far, of the Bond books. There are certainly fewer than the 290-odd of the signed limited edition of On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The Cape archives do not reveal how many copies were produced with the golden gun stamping. Copies tend to turn up most frequently in the extremities of the British Commonwealth, e.g., South Africa, Kenya, Australia and New Zealand" (Biondi & Pickard, 50). "Publication day would be the same throughout the British Commonwealth and stock would need to arrive in good time to meet this date. The books were sent from the UK via container ship (a 'slow boat') as air transport was expensive, and those nations furthest afield would be sent the earliest available copies (which, of course, meant the 'Golden Gun' bindings) at the first opportunity, to ensure a simultaneous publication as intended" (Gilbert, p. 418). Gilbert A13a (1.1). An excellent near fine example with the gilt bright, a small contemporary name to the front pastedown in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A very bright example of the rare first state binding. Made into the 1975 film of the same title starring Roger Moore as Bond, with an all-star cast which included Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland, Maud Adams and Hervé Villachaize.

The Man With the Golden Gun

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1965. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy of the book with only the slightest bit of foxing to the closed page block, otherwise bright, clean and lovely. Second issue binding, without the gilt gun to the upper board. In a Fine dust jacket that is bright and unfaded. A superior copy of a common enough book. Published a year after Ian Fleming's death, "The Man with the Golden Gun" is the final James Bond novel written by its original creator. Fleming's health rapidly decreased while writing the book and though he finished a draft of the novel in 1964, he never fully re-worked it. After Fleming's death, the novel was published in the U.K. and then serialized in The Daily Express and Playboy. Ironically, in this novel, Bond is presumed dead before returning to London. He's been brainwashed by the Soviet Union and attempts to assassinate "M." After regaining his senses, Bond is sent to the Caribbean to assassinate Francisco Scaramanga, known as "The Man with the Golden Gun.". Fine in Fine dust jacket.
