An uncommonly bright copy in the fresh jacket with negligible rubbing to spine ends. First edition, first printing (with Scribner's "A" to colophon) in the first issue jacket, printed in brown and making no mention of Hemingway's Nobel Prize. Previously, much has been made of the colour tint on the rear panel portrait on the dust jacket as an issue point. A very clean and crisp copy with fine dustjacket showing only a miniscule paper chip, unobtrusive and nearly imperceptible at the spine panel. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF WHAT IS ARGUABLY, THE AUTHOR’S MOST GREATEST WORK. Hemingway’s Nobel Prize winning novel and one of the most perfect works penned in the 20th century. Eric Linklater for the Broadsheet states, “Hemingway has written nothing so beautiful as this brief tale, and nowhere, I think has his vision of heroic scars of live been so surely realized... It is a little book in space but read it three times and it grows in the mind like an old story of one’s childhood: so certain it is, so satisfying are its pains and valiancy.”

Hemingway, Ernest

New York: Charles Scribner's & Sons, 1952. First edition of Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and one of his most famous works. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. A very nice example. Upon its publication in 1952 by Charles Scribner's Sons, The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year and was cited by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature to Hemingway in 1954. The novel reinvigorated Hemingway's literary reputation. It initiated a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novel was received with such alacrity, that it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Indeed, the publisher even wrote on an early dust jacket, calling the novel a "new classic," and it was compared by many critics to such revered works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.

Hemingway, Ernest

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher's light blue cloth lettered in metallic silver to spine and blind-stamped with author's signature to front board, Scribner's "A" and press device to copyright page; in the original unclipped dust jacket with illustration by "A.", blue-tinted portrait of author Lee Samuels to rear panel and no mention of Nobel Prize to rear flap. Overall a very good or better copy with sunning to extremities and toning to text block edges, and with upper tips of front and rear boards bumped; dust jacket lightly soiled and with some small chips and closed tears to extremities, as well as minor creasing to top edge of rear panel and front flap, otherwise a pleasing copy with a bright interior. Hanneman A24. The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most popular and widely acclaimed novels and the winner of the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Additionally, The Old Man and the Sea is accredited with being a major contributor to Hemingway's 1954 awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize in Literature. The plot tells of elderly protagonist Santiago, a fisherman, and his struggle with a giant Marlin off the coast of Havana, Cuba. Metaphorically, it is the story of Hemingway's own struggle to continue to write and preserve his art in spite of his fame and the cost it has taken on his mental and physical health; like Santiago who had not caught a fish in months, Hemingway had not written a novel since over a decade prior. This award-winning novel was Hemingway's last significant piece of writing before his death in 1961.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The Old Man and the Sea.

Hemingway, Ernest

New York: Charles Scribner's & Sons, 1952. First edition of Hemingway's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and one of his most famous works. Octavo, bound in full dark blue morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. In fine condition. A very nice presentation.
