Pilgrim's Progress: In Two Parts

Bunyan, John

L. and G. Seeley, London, 1840. Hardcover. Leather. Fine. "John Bunyan could be said to have authored one of the most influential books in the English language. But 'The Pilgrim's Progress' is so much more than an historical novel. Bunyan's plan for his readers is for them to travel through this book as an adventure through the Christian life - retold on paper and in pictures. The story of Christian and his companions has been a favourite for generations. John Bunyan's imaginative text brings out the same, practical, necessary lessons that everyone needs to know..." [Pub. Info] With original notes by the Rev. Thomas Scott. Full leather; gold on all page edges; gold tooling on cover; minor wear to hinge areas of outside covers; slight wear to the extremities. This is a deluxe and beautiful book.

BUNYAN, John

1840 John Bunyan Pilgrim's Progress Illustrated Demons Puritan VELLUM Binding "What God says is best, is best, though all the men in the world are against it." ― John Bunyan, The Pilgrims Progress John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the most important theological works ever written. Thought to be first printed in 1678, Bunyan began writing this story while in prison for his violations of the Conventicle Act, which prevent holding religious services outside the establishment of the Church of England. It is known that while Bunyan was in prison, his only companions were the Bible and Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" – thus, the two literary giants in his jail cell certainly influenced the writing of "Pilgrim's Progress." A Quaker, by the name of Granger, visited Bunyan in prison and says of him: "Bunyan, who had been mentioned among the least and lowest of our writers, and even ridiculed as a driveller by those who had never read him, deserves a much higher rank than is commonly imagined. His 'Pilgrim's Progress' gives us a clear and distinct idea of Calvinistic divinity." Allibone calls this book, "the best-known uninspired allegory which has been composed by the wit of man." The Pilgrim's Progress

John Bunyan

London - S. W. Partridge and Co, 1888 Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. An attractive copy of Bunyan's most influential work, this Christian allegorical tale is regarded as one of the most significant works of religious English literature. Containing sixty-two illustrations by Frederick Barnard, J. D. Linton, W. Small, etc. engraved by Dalziel Brothers, including frontispiece. Sixth edition. With introductory notes by the Reverend William Landels. Bunyan began his work while in the Bedfordshire county gaol for violations of the Conventicle Act, which prohibited the holding of religious services outside the auspices of the established Church of England. Early Bunyan scholars like John Brown believed The Pilgrim's Progress was begun in Bunyan's second shorter imprisonment for six months in 1675, but more recent scholars like Roger Sharrock believe that it was begun during Bunyan's initial, more lengthy imprisonment from 1660-1672 right after he had written his spiritual autobiography, Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners. The explicit Protestant theology of The Pilgrim's Progress made it much more popular than its predecessors. Bunyan's plain style breathes life into the abstractions of the anthropomorphized temptations and abstractions that Christian encounters and with whom he converses on his course to Heaven. Condition: In a green calf binding. Externally very smart, with just a few marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages have some spotting to the first and last few pages, and to the textblock edge, but are otherwise bright. Overall: NEAR FINE..
