TWAIN, Mark

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882. Very Good. First American edition, first issue with Franklin Press imprint. Publisher's deluxe binding of half-calf and marbled papercovered boards. The paper on the edges of the boards is a bit worn, and some rubbing to the extremities, as almost always seems the case, else a nice, tight, very good or better copy, with the spine gilt easily readable. On a lark a prince and a pauper change stations in life, allowing Twain to critique various legal and moral injustices. A nice copy of a classic children's tale, scarce in the deluxe binding. The Prince and the Pauper.

Twain, Mark

James R. Osgood and Company: New York, 1882. First edition, first issue with uncorrected text; p. 124, line 1 reading "estate"; p. 263 "do not"; p. 362 "reigned." Franklin Press imprint on verso of title page. Octavo, original publisher's green pictorial cloth. In near fine condition with only light shelfwear. BAL 3402; Johnson p. 39-41. The Prince and the Pauper is a treasured historical satire, played out in two very different socioeconomic worlds of 16th-century England, centers around the lives of two boys born in London on the same day: Edward, Prince of Wales, and Tom Canty, a street beggar. During a chance encounter, the two realize they are identical and, as a lark, decide to exchange clothes and roles -- a situation that briefly, but drastically, alters the lives of both youngsters. The Prince, dressed in rags, wanders about the city's boisterous neighborhoods among the lower classes and endures a series of hardships; poor Tom, now living with the royals, is constantly filled with the dread of being discovered for who and what he really is. Brimming with gentle humor and discerning social scrutiny, this timeless tale of transposed identities remains one of Twain's most popular and best-loved novels.

THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER

Twain, Mark

1881. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. With One Hundred and Ninety Illustrations. London: Chatto & Windus, 1881. 32 pp ads dated Nov 1881. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of Twain's historical tale for the young. During the last years of Henry VIII's reign, a prince finds a pauper who looks exactly like him and persuades him to exchange clothes -- at which time the prince is chased from the palace, is forced to live as a pauper, and experiences first-hand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law.~The London edition was intentionally published before the American edition, for copyright purposes; it was published in late November 1881, followed quickly by (or perhaps simultaneous with) the Montreal edition, both of which were followed by the (1882-dated) Boston edition in mid-to-late December. This English edition is much scarcer than the American edition, perhaps because it came out during the brief period when flourished the ill-conceived idea of binding leaves with staples; said staples quickly proved to do the job miserably, so by the mid-1880s binders reverted to using string.~This copy has the primary ad catalogue dated November 1881, and is in near-fine condition (minor darkening of the spine, volume slightly askew as usual for this 400-page volume); there is light damage to the gutter between pages 176 and 177, the result of the aforementioned stapled gatherings. The original patterned endpapers are clean and intact (remarkable for such a hefty book); the front free one has an early gift inscription (son to father, December 1882). McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3396.

Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.]

Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.] THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER. New York: Charles L. Webster, 1885. First edition, second state of text, later issue with cancel title-page with Webster imprint. Original green cloth, gilt, with Webster imprint at foot. Some fraying of spine ends and corners, light general rubbing; a very good copy. This is the first of the two Webster re-issues using unsold sheets of the first edition of this title (there was a second in 1887). In 1884, after Osgood went bankrupt, Webster took over the unsold sheets of all of Twain's Osgood printings and re-issued this title with cancel title-pages. From Osgood, Webster obtained 4,550 unfolded sets of sheets of THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, 50 folded sets of sheets, and 266 bound copies. Webster reprinted the book from the original plates in 1889, 1890, and 1891, and in 1892 issued a new edition from a new set of plates. Oddly, this 1885 re-issue of THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER is unrecorded, but BAL does note one of the similar Webster re-issues of Osgood's sheets of LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI (1891), in which Webster used a cancel title-page on first edition sheets.
