The Razor's Edge

By Maugham, W Somerset

The Razor's Edge, by W. Somerset Maugham, first published by Doubleday Doran in the United States in 1944, relates the experiences of a World War I pilot, Larry Darrell, who chooses to embrace a counter-cultural lifestyle as a way of dealing with his PTSD, though the syndrome is of course not identified as such in the book. This book challenges the cultural ideals of the 1940s, and disregards the stereotype of the returning military hero. Some controversy surrounded the publication of this book because of its lack of patriotic fervor and its embrace of bohemian ideals, but today it is regarded as one of the more important pieces of American literature from the 1940s.

The first printing remains highly collectible, and well kept copies are often sold for several thousand dollars (US). This signed limited edition of the book was printed with only 750 numbered copies, and features a red cover, with a black leather spine label with gilt lettering. First U.S. editions often show severe darkening and wear to the spine, and this flaw will lower the price dramatically, even with the author's signature.

The Razor's Edge
was also published in the U.K. by William Heinemann the same year. For this edition the printing is of much lower quality, though signed copies of this printing in good condition still are valued above $1,000 USD. This edition commonly shows print smuding, chipped edges and tanned pages. The spine is often in poor condition. An original copy of the screenplay for the movie starring Tyrone Power is also highly collectible.

The Razor's Edge (Original screenplay for the 1946 film, including two original photographs)

Maugham, W. Somerset (novel); Edmund Goulding (director); Lamar Trotti (screenwriter); Daryl F. Zanuck (producer); Tyrone Power, Gene Tierney, John Payne, Anne Baxter (starring)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1946. Seventh Revised Shooting Final script for the 1946 film. A few notations in holograph pencil, and a single typeover, throughout. Includes two vintage reference still photographs from the film. Early examples of this script state W. Somerset Maugham as the sole screenwriter, commissioned in mid-1945 by the film's original director, George Cukor, who was unhappy with Lamar Trotti's draft. Filming was delayed until March 1946 so that Tyrone Power, who was in military service until that time, could play the lead role. Cukor was replaced by Edmund Goulding due to the resulting schedule conflicts, and Trotti ultimately returned to rewrite the script and was given final screen credit. Maugham also wrote the screenplay for an adaptation of the 1946 film noir, "Somewhere in the Night," and a screenplay for an anthology of his short stories, "Trio," made in the UK in 1950 by Ken Annakin. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, Anne Baxter, and nominated for three others, including Best Picture. Blue titled wrappers, noted as 7TH REVISED SHOOTING FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 52, dated March 22, 1946. Title page present, dated March 22, 1946, noted as 7th Revised Shooting Final, with credits for novelist Maugham and screenwriter Trotti. 227 leaves, with last page of text numbered 167. Mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 3/28/46 and 7/13/46, and pink, yellow, and green pages of added French, English, and Hindustani dialogue (respectively). Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with three gold brads.

Jacket has not been price clipped. Light wear to the extremities of the jacket. No previous owner's names, not exlibrary. Overall a VERY GOOD book in a VERY GOOD brodart protected dust jacket. A good gift. THE RAZOR'S EDGE is a book by W. Somerset Maugham published in 1944. Its epigraph reads, "The sharp edge of a razor is difficult to pass over; thus the wise say the path to Salvation is hard." taken from verse in the Katha-Upanishad. The Razor’s Edge tells the story of an American fighter pilot (Larry Darrell) traumatized by his experiences in World War I, who sets off in search of some transcendent meaning in his life. The novel is supposed to be based on the life of Guy Hague, an American mining engineer. The story begins through the eyes of Larry’s friends and acquaintances as they witness his personality change after the War. His rejection of conventional life and search for meaningful experience allows him to thrive while the more materialistic characters suffer reversals of fortune. The book was twice adapted into film, first in 1946 starring Tyrone Power and Gene Tierney, and Herbert Marshall as Maugham, and then a 1984 adaptation starring Bill Murray, with Tibet replacing India as the place of Larry’s enlightenment (the monastery to which Larry travels in the 1984 movie adaptation is in Ladakh, an Indian-ruled region sometimes called "Little Tibet").. THE RAZOR'S EDGE

Maugham, W. Somerset

1944. A Novel. London / Toronto: William Heinemann, (1944). Original dark blue cloth, with dust jacket. First English Edition of one of Maugham's major novels.~W. Somerset Maugham turns to a religious theme and tells the story of a young American's quest for a faith. In Larry Darnell he has created one of his most radiant and appealing characters. Darnell, impelled by what he has seen of death in the war, renounces his fiancee, Isabel Bradley, and the opportunity for wealth and position to seek knowledge and a faith above and beyond human mortality. His search takes him all over the world and reaches its climax in India, where he attains the experience of the Absolute... It is the story of a man who achieves the absolute purification of his soul, superhuman wisdom, and an impregnable faith which gives him power over the material world. As a record of the journey of the human spirit, it stands with OF HUMAN BONDAGE as one of the great English novels of our time. [from the American dust jacket]~The English edition was preceded by the American edition by about four months. This is a near-fine copy of this cheaply-produced wartime book (covers slightly dusty, faint bend in the flexible front board); the jacket is very near-fine as well (very minor soil, minor ruffling at the spine-head; the jacket's spine has very little of the usual fading).
