A charming edition of this important and renowned collection of poems by James Thomson, with wood engravings by Thomas Bewick. 'The Seasons' is a series comprising four poems, each titled after a season; the completed collection first appeared in 1730, and inspired works by Joseph Haydn, Thomas Gainsborough, Joshua Reynolds and J. M. W. Turner.Written by James Thomson (1700-1748), a British poet and playwright, known for having written the words of 'Rule, Britannia', as well as 'The Seasons' and 'The Castle of Indolence'. This was his most influential work.With engravings by Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), who also illustrated 'Aesop's Fables' as well as his own natural history and ornithological works. From illustrations by John THurston (1774-1822), a British illustrator known for this work.In a charming leather binding with gilt detail to the spine and covers. In a full straight grain morocco binding. Externally, generally smart, with the title having rubbed away on the spine, which is a little rubbed to the joints, as are the extremities. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just the odd spot. Very Good Indeed

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
