Publisher's blue blind-stamped cloth with gilt titles and ship design to upper and gilt titles to spine. All edges red with dark blue endpapers. Illustrated with black and white frontispiece. Bookplate to pastedown, pencil inscription to flyleaf, extremities worn, chipped to spine ends. Evidently the more scarce of the three binding colours; the book was also available in green and russet coloured covers.

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1873 First American printing, FIRST STATE, without mention of translator on the title page [Ahearn]. 291 pages plus endpapers and title page. Dark blue endpapers. Frontis illustration by Jules Verne of Le Saint Michel. Title page in red and black ink. Roughly 4 ½ by 6 inches. Bound in green cloth with gilt lettering and illustration (same as frontis). Some ornamentation in blind. Page edges dyed red. One of the classics in the genre of science fiction. This edition supposedly preceded the English edition (titled Around the World in Eighty Days). In GOOD+ condition. Light soiling to the covers. Minor scuffing and fading, with the gilt decorations being somewhat dull (especially on the spine). Extremities scuffed with the corners bumped and the spine head and foot pulled and frayed. Cloth beginning to split along the center rear hinge. Spine sun darkened and scuffed along the hinges. Forward lean to the book. Text is clean and solid. Pages browning somewhat. Very faint dampstain present at the very top margin of the pages in last half of the book. This is faint and in no way affects the text. Small fingernail sized dampstain in fore edge margin of the title page. Previous owner’s gift inscription in pencil on the second blank endpaper. Overall an attractive copy in GOOD+ condition. . First American Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket.

Translated from the French by George Towle. This is the first English version of Verne's Eighty Days Around the World and scarce indeed in this condition. . First Edition, Second Printing. Cloth. Boston: James R. Osgood & Co., 1873. First English language/first US edition, 1873. A very rough ex-library copy in the hard-to-find variant blue binding. Includes all first issue points, with front cover and spine lettered and decorated in gilt and in blind, rear cover decorated in blind, all edges tinted red, greenish black endpapers, blanks at front and rear, frontis illustration of Le Saint Michel, title page in red and black dated 1873, no credit given to the translator, [4], vi-vii, [2], 10-291, [1]. Heavy wear and dampstaining to the lower portions of the book, lower portion of spine covering, with library label, nearly torn away, hinges a little chipped but good, a slight lean to the text block, one gathering of pages nearly detached, a few others a little loosened, library markings to front free endpaper and rear pastedown, library stamps all over the title page, dampstains to about sixty percent of each page through the first two thirds of the book, pages otherwise age-toned but clean. A rather sad but entirely readable first edition.. First US Edition. Hard Cover. Poor. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
