O'CONNOR, Flannery.

New York: Farrar, Straus & Cudahy,, 1960. Octavo. Original grey cloth backed red boards, titles to spine in white and grey, black end papers. With the dust jacket. Boards very lightly rubbed, lower corner bumped, head of spine faded, spine a bit rolled, contents slightly toned. A very good copy in the rubbed, toned, and nicked jacket with a few short closed tears and chips to the upper panel and head of the spine panel affecting both sets of titles. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title "For Louis Dollarhide in appreciation - Flannery O'Connor, Millidgeville, April 8, 1960". Inserted is O'Connor's calling card on which she has written "I took the liberty of correcting the typographical error on page 242, FOC". On page 242 she has crossed out "to" in line 19 and replaced it with "the". Louis Dollarhide was an English professor at the University of Mississippi who supported O'Connor's work and corresponded with her between 1957 and 1964. There are two binding variants of this edition, and the other presentation copy we have seen was also in red boards as opposed to the normal brown boards, so these may have been advance copies or produced specifically for the author.

The Violent Bear It Away.

O'Connor, Flannery

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1960. First edition of O'Connor's brilliant, innovative and landmark novel. Octavo, original half cloth. First published in 1960, The Violent Bear It Away is a landmark in American literature-a dark and absorbing example of the Gothic sensibility and bracing satirical voice that are united in Flannery O'Connor's work. In this, O'Connor's second novel, the orphaned Francis Marion Tarwater and his cousin, the schoolteacher Rayber, defy the prophecy of their dead uncle that Tarwater will become a prophet and baptize Rayber's young son, Bishop. A series of struggles ensues, as Tarwater fights an internal battle against his innate faith and the voices calling him to be a prophet while Rayber tries to draw Tarwater into a more "reasonable" modern world. Both wrestle with the legacy of their dead relative and lay claim to Bishop's soul. All this is observed by O'Connor with an astonishing combination of irony and compassion, humor and pathos. Bookplate, near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Milton Glaser. An exceptional example.

O'CONNOR, Flannery (1925-1964)

London: Longmans, 1960. First Impression. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First UK Edition (no further printings noted) of the author's third book and second novel, after Wise Blood. Small 8vo: [10],243,[1]pp. Publisher's tangerine cloth, spine lettered in gold; illustrated dust jacket, priced 16/-. About Fine (dust-soiled top edge) and apparently unread; about Fine jacket (back panels lightly soiled), vivid and bright. A scarce collectible example, one of just 3500 copies printed. Yet another example of the value to be found in the graphically superior designs of most UK editions of American authors's works. Published eight years after Wise Blood and sharing that book's "interest in reluctant Southern prophets, violence and the grotesque. The title is taken from the Douay translation of Matthew 11:12, which provides the book?s epigraph: 'From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away.' These are Jesus?s words to the multitude, and the themes of baptism, violence and the Bread of Life pervade the novel. . . . While O?Connor?s reputation has continued to rest most heavily on her stories, The Violent Bear It Away remains a considerable addition to the American Romance tradition, and her best attempt at longer fiction." The Violent Bear It Away

O'Connor, Flannery

New York. 1960. Farrar Straus & Cudahy. 1st American Edition. Honolulu Book Shops Sticker in the Back, Otherwise Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket W/A Few Small Pieces Missing. 243 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Milton Glaser. FROM THE PUBLISHER - In this novel Flannery O’Connor is at the top of her powers. THE VIOLENT BEAR IT AWAY displays her astonishing gifts for satire with compassion and for pathos with humor. It tells the story of Francis Marion Tarwater, an orphan who lives backcountry with his great-uncle in Powderhead, Tennessee. Before the old man dies, he prophesies Tarwater’s fate: the Lord will call him to be a prophet. Another crucial prophecy he makes is to Rayber, his nephew, a schoolteacher, about Rayber’s son, Bishop: ‘Either Tarwater or me is going to baptize that child. If not me in my day, him in his.’ At the old man’s death, little Bishop, thanks to Rayber’s alert opposition, remains unbaptized, and on Tarwater falls the burden of baptizing him. A struggle over Bishop begins between Tarwater and Rayber. The clash between these two temperaments provides some of the funniest episodes in the book, as Rayber exerts himself to the straining point in his sincere desire to rescue Tarwater’s mind from darkness. Yet Tarwater, interiorly, is undergoing a struggle of his own. He does not want to be either prophet or baptist; he shows extraordinary strengths within himself in resisting his fate. The story moves inexorably to its climax and an outcome which neither Rayber nor Tarwater could foresee. In its special number devoted to ‘The American Imagination,’ the Times Literary Supplement praised Flannery O’Connor’s ‘merciless humour, extraordinary composure, and a compassion so universal that it raises all her local characters to a universal scale.’ These qualities of her special genius are so vividly present in this novel, and are set forth in prose of such clarity and vigor as to make THE VIOLENT BEAR IT AWAY clearly her most important work. inventory #20934
