First Edition, first printing, 2 Volumes 1858 and 1859. Size 8.5" x 5.5", 382 and 376 pages. Condition very good, corners and spine edges and bands a bit rubbed, a few spots to prelims ends and page edges else contents clean. With the bookplate of Henry Yool Esq on the front pastedown in both volumes. Quarter red leather over marbled boards, five raised bands to the spine with gilt titles in the second and third and black tooling in the other compartments. Marbled page edges and pastedowns and endpapers. With frontispiece, illustrated title page and printed title page to each volume. Illustrated with 46 full-page plates and throughout with in-text steel and wood engravings by the author. First State, with "actresses" misprint at line 33, page 207 of Volume I and with chapters 47 and 48, XLVII and XLVIII, misnumbered XLVIII and XLIX, 48 and 49. This novel is Thackeray's American sequel to Henry Esmond, a continuation of Henry Esmond, exploring the fortunes of Esmond's family, in particular his twin grandsons, George and Henry Warrington in America.
