The Wayward Bus

By Steinbeck, John

Today, nearly forty years after his death, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures. Over the next year, his many works, beginning with the six shown here, will be published as black-spine Penguin Classics for the first time and will feature eye-catching, newly commissioned art.Of this initial group of six titles, The Wayward Bus is in a new edition. An imaginative and unsentimental chronicle of a bus traveling California's back roads. This allegorical novel of pilgrimage includes a new introduction by Gary Scharnhorst.Penguin Classics is proud to present these seminal works to a new generation of readers—and to the many who revisit them again and again.

The Wayward Bus

John Steinbeck (1902-1968)

312 pages. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") issued in reddish-orange cloth with gilt lettering to spine and cover and embossed pictorial to cover. (Goldstone & Payne: A23a) First edition. This is about a group of strangers who are stranded on a bus. In the beginning of the book Steinbeck's writing is so clear, so realistic you would swear you were inside the bus stop's coffee shop. Unfortunately, the reader can become lost in the last part of the book, when Steinbeck's writing becomes too allegorical. Although critically it is an undervalued book, Viking printed 100,000 copies of The Wayward Bus. (Firsts:17:1) Condition: Light shelf wear. Jacket restored some light stains to back wrapper else a very good copy in a very good to fine jacket.

The Wayward Bus

Steinbeck, John

New York: Viking Press, 1947. Book. Near Fine. Hardcover. First Edition, First Printing. 8vo; 20.5 cm.; 8inches tall; 312 pages. -------------- Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Minimal handling wear. Dust Jacket with a price of $2.75 is in a new clear protective Mylar sleeve has light handling wear, pushed spine tips and a bit of toning to the white of rear panel. First issue dust jacket with book title listed at the top of the front flap. ----------- The novel is about a group of people on a bus traveling California's back roads, it is unclear whether the characters are traveling toward a hopeful destination or merely fleeing something. Although considered one of Steinbeck's weaker novels at the time of its original publication, The Wayward Bus was financially more successful than any of his previous works. ------------ A black-and-white film version of The Wayward Bus was released in 1957, with a cast including Jayne Mansfield, Joan Collins, Dan Dailey, and Rick Jason. Much of the dramatic action in Steinbeck's novel consists of internal monologues, which the film version does not render. The movie was released in May 1957 at the height of Mansfield's popularity and enjoyed some box office success despite middling reviews.
