Thunderball

By Fleming, Ian

"The girl looked him up and down. He had dark, rather cruel good looks and very clear, blue-grey eyes. He was wearing a very dark-blue lightweight single-breasted suit over a cream silk shirt and a black knitted silk tie. Despite the heat, he looked cool and clean. 'And who might you be?' she asked sharply. 'My name's Bond, James Bond ...'"

When a stranger arrives in the Bahamas, the locals barely turn their heads, seeing another ex-pat with money to burn at the casino tables. But James Bond has more than money on his mind: he's got less than a week to find two stolen atom bombs hidden among the coral reefs. While acting the playboy, Bond meets Domino, sultry plaything of secretive treasure hunter Emilio Largo. In getting close to this gorgeous Italian girl, Bond hopes to learn more about Largo's hidden operation ...

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First edition of the ninth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To C.D. Jackson who says nice things! from Ian Fleming." The recipient Charles Douglas Jackson joined the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in 1943 and the following year he was appointed Deputy Chief at the Psychological Warfare Division at Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF), and it was during this time Fleming, working for Britain's Naval Intelligence Division, likely would have met Jackson. After the war, Jackson worked for Life Magazine, and at the time of Thunderball's publication, had become the magazine's publisher. Several years after Jackson's death in 1964 it was revealed that he had been a CIA agent since 1948. An exceptional association of two important figures in the British/American nexus of World War II and Cold War intelligence operatives given its fullest embodiment in the popular imagination through Fleming's enduring spy avatar James Bond. Gilbert A9a (1.1). Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Jacket art by Richard Chopping. "Thunderball represented a new departure [for the Bond series], with the introduction of SPECTRE and of Ernst Blofeld, a commanding villain who was to reappear. This gave a measure of continuity to the later Bond novels Thunderball worked well as an adventure story the theme of the theft of atom bombs seemed pertinent and modern" (Black, 49, 55). "A thriller, a chiller and a pleasure to read" (New York Times). It was adapted twice to the screen: under the present title in 1965 and as Never Say Never Again in 1983—each time starring Sean Connery.

FLEMING, IAN

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First Edition. Near fine in dust jacket. Presentation copy; inscribed by the author, “To Jonathan Miller from the Author.” Fleming, an antiquarian book collector himself, was clearly very much aware of old conventions slipping away, and often adhered to this old custom of inscribing books from “the Author.” In the nineteenth-century, it is not uncommon to find the closest associations; to a wife, mother, child, friend, etc., presented in this manner. In our day, this would seem cold, peculiar, or incomplete, but it does have a certain old-fashioned charm that antiquarian books are supposedly cherished for.

FLEMING, Ian.

1961. London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. Crown 8vo., original black cloth lettered in gilt, upper board blind stamped with skeletal hand motif after cover illustration, in original dust-jacket; near fine in like wrapper; with extremely light rubbing to corners and the odd spot. First edition. The ninth James Bond novel. Thunderball was the first of Fleming's books to be a novelization of an unfilmed James Bond screenplay. It was born from a collaboration of Fleming with Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, Ivar Bryce and Ernest Cuneo. The controversial shared credit of Fleming, McClory and Whittingham was, however, the result of a courtroom decision. The film starred Sean Connery in the title role. The novel constitutes the second wave of Bond villains: the first being SMERSH and the second being the introduction of Blofeld and SPECTRE. The influence of Ernst Stavro Blofeld's name can be traced back to Tom Blofeld, a Norfolk farmer and a fellow member of Fleming's club Boodle's, who was a contemporary of the author whilst he was at Eton.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1961. Octavo. Original dark brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, skeletal hand motif on front cover blocked in blind. With the dust jacket. A little foxing to edges, and endpapers, else clean internally. A near-fine copy in the sharp jacket, with just a hint of rubbing to extremities and scattering of small pale marks to rear panel. First edition, first impression, of the ninth Bond book. Ian Fleming's novel Thunderball incorporated material from an unproduced screenplay he had worked on in 1958 in collaboration with Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ivar Bryce, with the result that Fleming found himself in a well-publicised case in the High Court defending himself against McClory's accusations of plagiarism, though Fleming and McClory eventually settled out of court.

THUNDERBALL

Fleming Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First edition. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, in the pictorial dustjacket. 254 pp. A very handsome and clean copy in a complete and only very lightly mellowed dustjacket. FIRST EDITION. Fleming’s books have had a staying power that few thriller-writers can match, perhaps because Bond is such an intriguing and morally ambiguous hero. Some admire him as a suave, supremely competent man of action who always gets the girl; others decry him a superficial playboy with a streak of sadism. According to Fleming, “Bond is not a hero, nor is he depicted as being very likeable or admirable. He is a Secret Service agent. He’s not a bad man, but he is ruthless and self-indulgent. He enjoys the fight--he also enjoys the prizes. In fiction, people used to have blood in their veins. Nowadays they have pond water.” The ninth James Bond thriller finds the high-living superspy guzzling carrot juice in a recovery clinic until the shadowy SPECTRE forces him back into action. But who is SPECTRE, and what are its nefarious plans?

Ian Fleming

1961 First Edition / First State (Jonathan Cape Ltd) Original Unclipped Richard Chopping Designed Dust Jacket A superb example of Thunderball by Ian Fleming; published in 1961 by Jonathan Cape Ltd. (No other publication dates) The book is in near fine condition - black clothed hardback cover with skeletal hand motif to front board and gilt lettering to spine. No issues other than very minor bumping at spine foot. The interior is clean and white throughout and has no age related issues whatsoever. I would class the condition as fine other than for the one issue which is a red book shop stamp at the foot of the front paste down page. The leaf ends are also perfectly white and give the book an extremely attractive tidy appearance. The spine and binding are fine and book is tight. The dust jacket is the correct version for this book and is in very good + condition with only a couple of issues to note that prevents me stating it as near fine. The front cover has some faint rubbing at the top edge and there is some small marks at the very edge top and bottomof rear flap. The one real issue of note is some rubbing and chipping at spine top. (See Photos) There is no sun related damaged and the covers and flaps are clean, bright and unmarked. The front flap has a blurb about this book and Ian Fleming; this continues to rear flap. The price is unclipped showing as 15s. net at the foot of front flap.
