Typee

By Melville, Herman

Typee is American writer Herman Melville's first book, partly based on his actual experiences as a captive on Nuku Hiva (which Melville spelled as Nukuheva) in the South Pacific Marquesas Islands and the title comes from a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. It was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime; for 19th century readers his career seemed to go downhill afterwards, but during the early 20th century it was seen as just the beginning of a career that peaked with Moby-Dick (1851).

Typee: a Peep at Polynesian Life. During a Four Months' Residence in a Valley of the Marquesas; the Revised Edition, with a Sequel

MELVILLE, Herman

New York: Wiley and Putnam, 1846. Hardcover. Very Good. Revised American edition, with the sequel, first printing, second state. Two parts in one. Small octavo. 308pp. Contemporary half straight grain morocco gilt and cloth, with the glazed pink paper label of "J.H. Oliphant, Book-binder. Oswego, N.Y." on the front pastedown. Contemporary penciled owner's name, lacks front fly, rubbing at the joints and extremities, but still a pleasing very good copy. Melville's first book, his dramatic account of his adventures in the South Seas was immediately popular, but he was accused of fictionalizing events (these accusations spurred, in part, by the book's disdain for missionaries). Melville's shipmate, Toby Greene, read one such critical review and was prompted to write his own short account verifying most of Melville's tale. Consequently, this edition deletes some passages critical of missionaries, but adds "The Story of Toby" vindicating the author of deceit. *BAL* 13654.

Wee bit of rubbing to extremities, quite minor. Sequel "Story of Toby" (15 pp.) at rear, followed by 16 pp. advertisements. Lovely copy. The Marquesas a group of 14 islands in the southern Pacific Ocean, part of French Polynesia. Located at 9° 00S, 139° 30W, the islands lie just under 1400 km northeast of Tahiti and approximately 4800 km from Mexico's west coast, the closest continental land mass..." (Lori Karnath, 37th President of the Explorers Club, writing in a 7/2/12 article in The Huffington Post). In 1842, Melville left the company of the ship which brought him from Massachusetts and took up residence on the island of Nuku Hiva, the largest in the Marquesas, and dwelt amongst the Taipi people, who like many Polynesian peoples, were said to be cannibals, or have once practiced, cannibalism. His time there was known to have, in part, inspired his great novel, Moby Dick.

Typee: A Peep at Polynesian Life, During a Four Months' Residence in A Valley of the Marquesas; the Revised Edition, with a Sequel

Melville, Herman

New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1857. "Typee" was Melville's first book, a romanticized account of his adventures as a common sailer. It was one of his very few best-sellers until his redicovery by subsequent generations. This is a Very Good copy of the "Revised Edition' that adds "The Story of Toby." An uncommon title. Dark brown cloth binding, decoratively stamped. Clean text; 307 pages, with a seven-page publisher's advertisement for Melville's new wotk, "Omoo." This is an ex-library copy, from the Franklyn Typographical Society, but the treatments are minimal: a small stamp on the Title Page and a 19th-century label on the FFEP. While this is a sound copy, it is faily rough, with rubbing at the margins and a cloth repair covering the spine. While not a Binding Copy by condition, Quercus thinks that it would be a suitable candidate for a nice rebind.. First Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
