WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG [ with:] WINNIE-THE- POOH [with:] NOW WE ARE SIX [with:] THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER

Milne, A.A.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1928. Four volumes. Gilt decorated cloth, t.e.g. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. First trade editions of the constituent volumes of Milne's durable chronicle of the adventures of Christopher Robin, with the circle widening to include Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet, et al. The first volume is the second state, with page 'ix' numbered. It bears a small ink 1924 gift inscription in the upper corner of the free endsheet, has a bit of the usual offsetting to the endsheet gutters, and bears the tiny bookplate of Mary Elisabeth Hudson on the pastedown. It is otherwise very good and bright, in lightly worn and tanned dust jacket, with a few small nicks and faint spots. The second volume is fine and bright, in near fine dust jacket with a couple finger smudges on the front panel, a trace of tanning and a few faint spots to the spine panel, and a short, closed tear at the top edge of the front panel. The third volume is fine and bright in very good dust jacket with trace of tanning to spine and edges, and a few faint spots to the spine. The final volume is fine and bright, in a near fine dust jacket with a few faint spots on the spine panel. Withal, while not a perfect set, this a very, very respectable one.

When We Were Very Young.

MILNE, A. A.

London: Methuen & Co.,, 1924. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, gilt vignettes to the covers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Illustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Spine gently rolled and a little toned, very slight rubbing to extremities, light offsetting to endpapers, an excellent copy in the unusually bright jacket with browned spine, faint foxing to panels, tiny nicks to extremities with very minor chips to spine ends. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the illustrator on the front free endpaper, "To Aunt Fanny, with love from Ernest, Xmas 1924". Shepard was very close to his aunts; his mother had died when he was ten, after which his aunts helped to raise him, taking him and his siblings on many trips. Shepard described Fanny as "the energetic one" and "chief organiser" of the family in his autobiography Drawn From Memory (1957), recalling fondly a story of her visit to the Jubilee illuminations, "in spite of Aunt Alicia's protests and warnings". This copy has been in the family by descent since the presentation. When We Were Very Young is the first and the scarcest of the four Pooh books with an initial print run of 5,175 regular trade copies. It was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286). This copy is in the second state of the first impression, with the page number ix present in the preliminaries. In copies of the first state the contents ix is unnumbered.

When We Were Very Young.

MILNE, A. A.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd.,, 1945. Octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single rule to boards with pictorial motifs, twin rule to turn-ins, floral endpapers, gilt edges. With black and white illustrations. A fine copy. Signed copy of the forty-third edition, signed by Milne on the title page. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286).

In fine condition. Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame" (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day... 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]... and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch" (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in "a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal" (DNB). When We Were Very Young is second issue, as usual, with page ix numbered.
