Where the Wild Things Are.

Sendak, Maurice

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1963. First edition in the first-issue dust jacket of one of the scarcest and most desirable books in modern children's literature. Oblong quarto, original cloth backed pictorial paper boards. Inscribed by Maurice Sendak with a drawing of Mickey Mouse on the half-title page, "For David, Hi! Maurice Sendak May '80." It was Walt Disney's 1940 feature film Fantasia, starring Mickey Mouse, that inspired 12-year old Maurice Sendak to become a cartoonist. Born the same year that the famous anthropomorphic cartoon character made his first appearance in the the 1928 short film Steamboat Willie, Sendak described Mickey Mouse as "the emblem of happiness and funniness [and] the little brother I always wanted" (Romano, 2012). One of the most avid collectors of Mickey Mouse memorabilia, Sendak has noted that early appearances of Mickey in both film and collectible figurines had teeth, which were later omitted as his character became more popular and his more cruel tendencies were transferred to other characters. Sendak's characters, with plenty of teeth, came to embody not just the adorable and benevolent, but the frightening and dangerous; evoking feelings in the children who read his stories quite unlike those encouraged by the typical illustrated children's tale. Fine in a near fine first-issue dust jacket. This is the correct first state of the dust jacket with no mention of the Caldecott award, and a $3.50 price at top of front flap. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example, rare and desirable in this condition and with a drawing of the character that inspired Sendak's career, Mickey Mouse. Hailed as "the Picasso of children's books," Maurice Sendak produced more than 85 books, of which Where the Wild Things Are is undeniably the most famous, being one of the ten best-selling children's books of all time. "Wild Things!' When Max's sojourn among them unfolded in kinematic splendor in 1963, adults trembled and children reveled. Reaching back into his own Brooklyn childhood, Sendak created the enduring child-hero Max, who overcomes his fears and achieves catharsis in a colorful fantasy tableau. The book was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal by the American Library Association" (NYPL Books of the Century 212). Basis for the 2009 film directed by Spike Jonze starring Max Records and features the voices of James Gandolfini, Paul Dano, Lauren Ambrose, Forest Whitaker, Catherine O'Hara, and Chris Cooper.

Housed in the original purple felt-lined, cream buckram clamshell case with color plate on front panel (similar to the color illustration on page [33]), and rectangular limitation label with "85" written in black ink on inside. A very fine copy. Where the Wild Things Are is a 1963 children's picture book by American writer and illustrator Maurice Sendak (1928-2012), and was originally published by Harper & Row. The story of only 338 words focuses on a young boy named Max who, after dressing in his wolf costume, wreaks such havoc through his household that he is sent to bed without his supper. Max's bedroom undergoes a mysterious transformation into a jungle environment, and he winds up sailing to an island inhabited by malicious beasts known as the "Wild Things." After successfully intimidating the creatures, Max is hailed as the king of the Wild Things and enjoys a playful romp with his subjects; however, he decides to return home, to the Wild Things' dismay. After arriving in his bedroom, Max discovers a hot supper waiting for him. The book has been adapted into other media several times, including an animated short in 1974 (with an updated version in 1988); a 1980 opera; and a live-action 2009 feature-film adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze. The book had sold over nineteen million copies worldwide as of 2009, with ten million of those being in the United States. Sendak won the annual Caldecott Medal from the children's librarians in 1964, recognizing Wild Things as the previous year's "most distinguished American picture book for children". It was voted the number one picture book in a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers, not for the first time. This 25th Anniversary edition had the color reproductions done to Maurice Sendak's exact specifications.

Where the Wild Things Are.

SENDAK, Maurice.

New York: Harper & Row,, 1963. Oblong quarto. Original cloth-backed pictorial paper boards. With the Sendak designed dust jacket. Illustrated by Sendak. Occasional spotting to pages, small pencil notes to two pages, which list the names of the Wild Things, light rubbing to corners, in the dust jacket with toning to white areas, light spotting along rear panel edges, short closed tears to front edges, lower corner to front flap clipped, 3.50 price still intact at upper portion. A very good copy. First edition, first printing, first issue. There seem to be multiple issues of the first printing of this elusive and important book. Variations in price occur throughout the later states but have no bearing on the status of the true first issue. Primacy is established through the text of the blurb which, as in the present copy, makes no mention of the Caldecott Award bestowed upon the book on publication. The winning of such a prestigious prize compelled the publishers to recall the entire edition and change the text on the dust wrapper to include the achievement. Copies therefore with the original blurb are rare and are indubitably the earliest.

Where the Wild Things Are

Sendak, Maurice

New York: Harper and Row, 1988 Illustrated by the author. 25th Anniversary edition. Charmingly signed and inscribed by Sendak to the first free leaf with a drawing of one of the wild things: "For Max [drawing] -Boo! / Maurice Sendak / Dec. '90". Publisher's quarter gray cloth and pictorial paper-covered boards, colorful illustrated endpapers; with a bookplate bearing the name "Max Wedder," identifying the inscribe as the donor who gifted the book to Madison Presbyterian Day School in 1992. A very good copy with wear to extremities, a few black spots scattered to upper left part of front board, transparent sticker remnants near spine foot to front and rear board, bookplate to recto of front free endpaper, Madison Presbyterian Day School rubber stamp to verso, and school library pocket to rear pastedown containing the original card bearing stamps from 1992 to 2006. Overall, a very nice copy with a charming provenance. The winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal, Where the Wild Things Are is Maurice Sendak's iconic children's book about a young boy who is sent to bed without supper and imagines himself in a fantasy jungle world where he is the king of the ferocious "wild things." A very personal book, the story is based on Sendak's childhood; the idea of "wild things" came from the Yiddish term "vilde chaya" or "wild animal" that was popular with his mother, the wild things themselves were based on his aunts and uncles, and the experience of being sent to bed without supper for being a "vilde chaya" was one that Sendak knew well. Although the book was initially criticized for its dark undertones, Sendak's keen ability to connect with the emotions and dreams experienced by children worldwide, paired with his exquisite illustrations, make this book a timeless classic. This book, inscribed to a recipient with the same name as the book's protagonist, was donated to the Madison Presbyterian Day School in 1992 by Max Wedder. In circulation for 14 years, the book bears signs of being well-loved by the schoolchildren who used it, and was retained by the school's library until 2019.. Illus. by Sendak, Maurice. Inscribed by Author. Hard Cover. Very Good.

[ New York]: Harper & Row, 1964. Oblong small quarto. Pictorial cloth (the library binding). Illustrated throughout in color. Some dustsoiling along the extreme edges of the binding and fold-ins, otherwise a good copy in torn and mended later dust jacket with reviews on the front flap and the Caldecott seal (the library binding price $3.79 is intact). Briefly, but pleasantly inscribed and signed by the author on the half-title. Assuredly a later printing of the dust jacket, and most likely of the book itself, with the "Harper Crest Library Edition" denotation on the lower cover and the gilt label across the spine.
