Wise Blood.

O'Connor, Flannery

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1952. First edition of O'Connor's powerful first novel. Octavo, original cloth. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to her editor, "For Robie --- Flannery." Robie Macauley was an American editor, novelist and critic whose literary career spanned more than 50 years. In 1966, Macauley became the Fiction Editor at Playboy where he published fiction by Saul Bellow, Roald Dahl, Nadine Gordimer, John Irving, Doris Lessing, Vladimir Nabokov, and Kurt Vonnegut among many others. In 1978 he became a Senior Editor at Houghton Mifflin where he was responsible for publishing The Mosquito Coast, The Marrakesh One-Two, Shoeless Joe, and several works of nonfiction. Near fine in a good first issue dust jacket with some wear to the front panel and crown of the spine. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional association. Assembled from disparate stories first published in Mademoiselle, Sewanee Review and Partisan Review, Flannery O'Connor's first novel, Wise Blood, has come to be appreciated as a work of "low comedy and high seriousness". Themes of redemption, racism, sexism, and isolation are prevalent throughout the novel which O'Connor stated was about "freedom, free will, life and death, and the inevitability of belief."

O'CONNOR, Flannery

First Edition, Advanced Review Copy in Dust Jacket of the Author's First Book O'CONNOR, Flannery. Wise Blood. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1952. Stated first edition, advanced review copy with the review copy slip tipped in at the front endpapers. The slip is stamped "May 19, 1952 $3.00." Octavo (8 x 5 3/8 inches; 203 x 135 mm). [1]-232 pp. Publisher's full yellow cloth, spine stamped in brown. In publisher's dust jacket. Jacket with the tiniest ding at the top of front panel, but there is no loss. Fore-edge of text block with a small ding, barely affecting the edge of the first 20 or so pages. Overall a fine copy in an about fine dust jacket. One other story in [O'Connor's] masterís thesis was revised to become the first chapter of her first novel, Wise Blood, published in 1952. This novel was some five years on the drawing board before OíConnor was willing to release it to Harcourt, Brace. She was committed to draft after draft of her stories and novels, often following circuitous routes on the way to final versions. The hero of Wise Blood, Hazel Motes, whom OíConnor was to call ìa Christian malgrÈ luiî in her authorís note to the 1962 second edition of the novel, sets the tone for the religiously displaced types that haunt her fiction. These unlikely creatures preach strange gospels, engage in rituals of drowning-baptism and ìprayer healingî (burying morbid newspaper stories), have visions near ìhog pensî and before figures of ìartificial Negroes,î and have heads of Byzantine Christs tattooed on their backs. Despite OíConnorís Roman Catholic upbringing and her ongoing commitment to its teachings, her characters tend mainly to be fundamentalist Protestants. These were the religious types she observed most frequently during her years in and around Milledgeville." (American National Biography) HBS 68187. $4,500

Wise Blood

O'Connor, Flannery

New York: Harcourt Brace & Company, 1952 First edition, first printing. Publisher's yellow cloth, spine lettered in dark gray; in the original pictorial dust jacket, with red and gray circles emanating waves behind the white title lettering, spine lettered in red and black. Book near fine, with some light wear and faint spotting to the extremities, former owner's inscription to the front fly leaf, otherwise bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and a few minor chips to the extremities, faint toning to the spine, short closed tear to the front panel at the spine head, some soiling to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a very good and pleasing copy. Wise Blood is a Southern Gothic novel that tells the story of Hazel Motes, a recently discharged World War II veteran returning from combat to his childhood home in Tennessee. After finding his family gone and their home destroyed, Motes founds the Church Without Christ, an anti-religion which preaches a reliance on self rather than God. O'Connor, herself a native of Georgia and raised Roman Catholic, explores questions of morality and ethics in the 20th century; indeed, Motes' nickname "Haze" reflects his spiritual confusion in the modern age. Interestingly, O'Connor assembled Wise Blood from several previously published short stories.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

Wise Blood

O'Connor, Flannery

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1952. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Good/fair. First edition, octavo size, 232 pp. Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964), Southern novelist and essayist, wrote only two novels; this, "Wise Blood", was the first. The first chapter is from her master's thesis at the University of Iowa, and she spent five years working with the rest of the text before she was satisfied that it was ready to release to the publisher; she was committed to the process of revision, and her novels went through many drafts before completion. "The hero of 'Wise Blood', Hazel Motes, whom O'Connor was to call 'a Christian malgré lui' in her author's note to the 1962 second edition, sets the tone for the religiously displaced types that haunt her fiction. These unlikely creatures preach strange gospels, engage in rituals of drowning-baptism and 'prayer healing' (burying morbid newspaper stories), have visions near 'hog pens' and before figures of 'artificial Negroes,' and have heads of Byzantine Christs tattooed on their backs. Despite O'Connor's Roman Catholic upbringing and her ongoing commitment to its teachings, her characters tend mainly to be fundamentalist Protestants. These were the religious types she observed most frequently during her years in and around Milledgeville." (N.B., per ANB.) Ms. O'Connor was the recipient of the 1972 National Book Award for her "Complete Stories", which in an online poll taken in 2009 was named the best book ever to have won the National Book Awards. ___DESCRIPTION: Original yellow cloth with lettering blocked to backstrip in black, in original dust jacket (correctly labeled with $3.00 to the head of the front flap), octavo size (8.25" by 5.75"), [1-8] 9-232 pp., first edition (so stated), of an edition of 3000 copies. ___CONDITION: A good copy only; it has a strong square text block with solid hinges, and is internally clean with no prior owner markings; the corners are straight (albeit somewhat rubbed), we are grading as good only due to a damp stain that worked through the book at the backstrip, causing some chipping to the head and tail of the spine; otherwise a very good copy. The dust jacket is fair to almost good, it is all in one piece with the flaps still quite bright and is not price-clipped, with the authors portrait unscathed; it does suffer from some medium to large chips at all sides, and has evidence of the same stain afflicting the book. Though still a good jacket and intact, we have priced reflecting the condition, which is overall very good. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
