Front end paper gone, 1" split front hinge at top. For all the wear to the exterior, the rest of the book is in decent shape. These original guides use to be quite plentiful, but not so much now. .

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1937. 8vo size blue clothbound hardcover with gilt titles and purple title block on both spine and front cover; 325 toned pages with some black and white illustrations on glossy stock. Charles Goodspeed (1867-1950) was an antiquarian bookseller. He founded Goodspeed's Book Shop in Boston, Massachusetts in 1898. Goodspeed's closed in 1995 with the retirement of Charles' son. This volume is his memoir. Tucked into book is a newspaper clipping from the Boston Herald, 1950 with Mr. Goodspeed's obituary. Bumped head and heel of spine; cocked spine, small bit of shelf soil on bottom of book. Tanned area on inside front cover and fep caused by the newspaper clipping. Original booksellers stamp on fep (not Goodspeed's); small blemished area on front cover. . Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Contemporary gift inscription, contents page a little roughly opened, endpapers and a few pages with faint offsetting and foxing, rear cover with a dampstain, still very good in a price-clipped good only dust jacket with modest general wear, chipping and small tears along the edges, a corresponding internal dampstain and a slightly sunned spine. Scarce in jacket.

This copy has been inscribed and signed by the author (to Mrs. A. M. Batchelder) directly on the front loose end page. The book is in near fine condition. No other ownership marks/writing present within. Hinges tight, interior pages bright. A few spots of insect damage to the inner hinges. Light edge wear/bumping to the cloth covers.
