About the author

Jacek Wisniewski was educated at Warsaw University, where he is at present Professor of English in the Institute of English Studies. He spent two academic years as visiting scholar in Britain and the United States: Newcastle and Durham, 1983 (British Council Study Grant), Rutgers and Princeton, 1988 (American Council of Learned Societies scholarship). His Ph.D. dissertation (1978) discussed autobiographies, memoirs, diaries, letters and autobiographical novels by English poets and novelists of the Great War. He is the author of two books on the literature of war in the 20th century: Mars and the Muse: Attitudes to War and Peace in 20th Century English Literature, Warsaw University Press, 1988; The Great Crusade: American Literature of the First World War, Warsaw University Press, 1995. Wisniewski has published a number of reviews and essays on 20th century poets (Stephen Spender, Louis MacNeice, R.S. Thomas, Seamus Heaney, Michael Longley, Tony Harrison), in academic journals in Poland, Italy and Canada.
