The publication history is unusual. "Put into type and printed from time to time, over a period of more than three years, in the Rockford printing shop of the author. ... Though called the "third edition" this is really the first complete narrative. The first edition was simply a sketch published in the initial number of the Censer, and the second was a 64-page pamphlet published in 1870 - Jenkins, A FULL HOWES." [ Howes L251].
