N.p.: Continental, 1968. Collection of five vintage photographs from the 1968 film, four studio still photographs, one with wide margins, and one compilation photograph of four stills. John Cassavetes seminal fourth film as director took three years to complete, was shot (and edited) in his own house starring his friends (who often doubled as camera operators), and ushered in an entirely new American independent cinema, made entirely outside the studio system. A searing, emotionally bruising depiction of a disintegrating marriage in American middle-class suburbia. Cassavetes said of the film, "I don't think anybody in Europe knows that America really exists beyond what Hollywood shows them. So we would like to try to show them what Americans are really like... bad and good." Nominated for three Academy Awards, Best Screenwriting, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Selected for the National Film Registry in 2011. Shot on location in Los Angeles. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine. Complete collation details available on request. Rosenbaum 1000. Criterion Collection 252. Vogel, Film as a Subversive Art. BFI 1126. Scorcese, A Personal Journey Through American Movies.
