Chaplin and Cocteau first met in 1936, while traveling by boat to Japan, and remained friendly throughout the intervening years. At the time this photograph was taken, Cocteau was living in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat at the estate of socialite Francine Weisweiller, while Chaplin owned a villa of his own, which he would sell to David Niven a few years later.

Description:
Paris: Keystone, 1958. Vintage borderless photograph of director Jean Cocteau and actor Charlie Chaplin linked arm-in-arm with Chaplin's daughter Geraldine during a party at the Palais Garnier on December 20, 1958. With manuscript pencil annotations regarding cropping on the verso. Chaplin and Cocteau first met as a coincidence, on a ship traveling from Japan to the US in 1936. They remained in contact over the ensuing years, until Cocteau's death in 1963. 7 x 5 inches. Very Good plus, lightly edgeworn and moderately toned overall.
