About This Item

Franklin, Tennessee, U.S.A.: Naxos Audio Books, 2000. Book. Very Good. 2 abridged audio tapes in original plastic case. Running time: approx. 2 hrs., 31 mins. From School Library Journal: "A pleasant and informative audio biography of English novelist Jane Austen joins the wealth of print biographies that have appeared in the last few years. Reader Teresa Gallagher, a well-known voice on BBC radio drama, sets a most appropriate tone here with her expressive and precise British accent. Classical piano music provides an introduction as well as short atmospheric breaks in the reading. Jane Austen, born in late 18th century Southern England, led an active and happy, though not highly eventful life, surrounded by a high-spirited and affectionate family. She began writing as a young girl, and though the four novels that were published during her lifetime (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park and Emma) received favorable reviews, she was not celebrated as an author while alive. Listeners will get a clear sense of the relationships and social encounters which were important to Austen's life and inspirations to her writing. Her novels provide a valuable record of the manners of upper middle class English country gentry, and Elizabeth Jenkins' biography similarly depicts the novelist, her class, and the era. School and public libraries will be rewarded with this fine portrait of the life and times of a still popular English woman author.".

Reviews

On Aug 28 2021, a reader said:
I can't get over this biography. Some of the things that I've read about Jane Austen (in other biographies about her) are in reality taken very much out of context. This book explains the relevant context in very good style and in a persuasive manner. Perhaps this is because it written in the late 1930s and therefore expected biographers to investigate their subjects thoroughly. I'm impressed because Elizabeth Jenkins' dedication to detail showers illumination on the elusive backstory about the most egregiously snarky comments and accusations that are made about and against lovely Jane and her exceptional family. You will be amazed at the truth. Perhaps all of these little known golden back histories are not widely accessible anymore or it may be that other biographers just cannot or will not put in the time to get the story right. Whatever the reason for such detail and expository accuracy, I agree with the reviewer from the distant past, who said that she would never to lend her copy to anyone as she would greatly fear it's loss. If you want to become really familiar with Jane Austen's life get this book.
