Biblio.live Bookseller Highlights

The first Biblio.live Antiquarian Book Fair is fast approaching and we’re excited to showcase a few sellers that will be exhibiting their exclusive items when the fair opens on March 24-26, 2022.

We are proud to offer a diverse lineup of exhibitors, from established dealers who have been selling rare books on Biblio for 17 years to newer dealers with fresh takes on old specialties. There are books and ephemera being listed in every interest – from Americana to Zoology!


William Allison Books

William Allison Books in Houston, Texas, has been a Biblio seller since 2020 and is a member of ABAA, ILAB, and the Texas Booksellers Association. They specialize in Western Americana, Texas, Wild West, and Railroads, as well as Texas authors including J. Frank Dobie, Larry McMurtry, J. Evetts Haley, and Tom Lea.

The True Southern Route to and from California is via El Paso and the Texas Pacific Railway.

This timetable map was printed by Woodward & Tiernan Printing Co. in Dallas, Texas, in 1901. The map is approximately 44 x 91 cm folded into 10.5 x 22 cm and features the map of Texas with portions of Louisiana and Oklahoma and an inset map of the United States, both showing T&P lines.

Biomed Rare Books

Dr. Robert L. Chevalier started Biomed Rare Books in North Garden, Virginia, in 2015 as an internet-based bookshop specializing in rare and antiquarian books and papers in medicine and the life sciences. Dr. Chevalier collected and studied printed works in the field for many years and has attended classes at the Rare Book School at the University of Virginia and the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar. Biomed Rare Books specializes in Biology, Botany, Illustrated Books, Medicine, Natural History, and Zoology, and they recently joined Biblio in 2021.

1852 first edition of a large monograph on the American Mastodon by prominent Boston surgeon, illustrated by fine lithographic plates, inscribed presentation by author John Collins Warren, to Library of Congress by Congressman President of MGH.

The Book Collector, ABAA, ILAB, has been selling on Biblio since 2005. Located in Fort Worth, Texas, The Book Collector specializes in Anthropology, Chess, Colonial America, Exploration, Voyages and Travel, and select literature.

Reshevsky on Chess: The US Champion Tells How He Wins

Samuel Reshevsky was a Polish chess prodigy and later a leading American chess grandmaster. This is the first edition of the US chess prodigy’s story, inscribed by the author. It includes 110 annotated games with accompanying autobiographical text, a table of his tournament and match results, indexes of openings and opponents, and a short biography, presumably by the editors of Chess Review.

Journobooks

Journobooks of Morston, Norfolk, UK, has been selling on Biblio since 2019. They specialize in Architecture, Art Fiction, Journalism, Literary Criticism, and Poetry, including an excellent selection of hard-to-find newspapers, books about journalism and journalists, and other media. They also sell collectible volumes on behalf of the charity Friends of Morston Church. 

Deyá: A Portfolio Of Five Poems And Lithographs

London, 1972. Artists Proof copy out of the edition of 75 of this attractive set of poems by Robert Graves accompanied by five Paul Hogarth lithographs, each signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.

Uncharted Books

Uncharted Books is an independent brick-and-mortar bookstore in Chicago, Illinois, and has been a Biblio seller since 2018. They sell a highly curated selection of used books, zines, and rare titles, focusing on the literary, the local, the strange, and the adventurous. They also have a white Siberian husky at their store named “Ramona Flowers Quimby Age 8 Adams McAdams McSwain.”

Handwritten Letters from Stephen Crane to Elbert Hubbard and Related Ephemera

This is a unique collection of paper ephemera regarding an 1895 celebratory dinner honoring Stephen Crane, whose The Red Badge of Courage was at the time a modest success in its second printing. The event was hosted by Elbert Hubbard, the influential publisher, editor, and founder of the Roycroft arts and crafts community.

Yesterday’s Muse, ABAA, ILAB, IOBA 

Yesterday’s Muse, ABAA, ILAB, IOBA, has been a Biblio seller since 2005 and opened a brick-and-mortar store in Webster, New York, in 2008. They specialize in History, Literature, and Philosophy. Owner Jonathan Smalter is a member of the ABAA, former vice president of IOBA, and a 2011 graduate of the Colorado Antiquarian Book Seminar. 

20 hrs. 40 min: Our Flight in the Friendship – The American Girl, First Across the Atlantic by Air, Tells Her Story by Amelia Earhart

This is a 1928 hardcover of Amelia Earhart’s first book. A memoir by one of the most recognizable names in aviation published the same year as her historic transatlantic flight. All plates present, including photographs, drawings, and a facsimile of six transatlantic flight log book pages.

What’s with all of the acronyms?

Most of the acronyms you may see at the end of seller names represent their membership to specific prestigious trade organizations. Here is a list of some of the most common acronyms and what the organizations represent:

IOBA

The Independent Online Booksellers Association (IOBA) is dedicated to maintaining and enforcing high ethical and professional standards for their member booksellers, including a Code Of Ethics and promotion of trust between customers and booksellers by providing a safe online environment for the purchase and sale of books. ABAA

The Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America was founded in 1949 to promote interest in rare and antiquarian books and book collecting and to foster collegial relations. The ABAA has the strictest and most sweeping Ethics Code in the book trade, and all ABAA members are bound by it. These values are promoted internationally through the ABAA’s affiliation with ILAB. ILAB 

The International League of Antiquarian Booksellers was established in 1949 as a global network of 22 national antiquarian booksellers, but these days it includes over 1600 affiliated rare booksellers based in 36 countries worldwide. The League publishes and upholds a code of ethics based on the wide experience of all its national associations. The code is binding on all ILAB booksellers.
