About This Item

Hamilton: Local 1005 Hamilton, 1996. -----The scan you see is the book you get. Black cloth with gilt (roughly) 11 1/4" by 9" (inches), 58 pages, filled with b & w photos, Near Fine condition, dust jacket is in Near Fine condition, now in Mylar. "The strikers had manufactured an iron wall around the plant on land. Unfortunately a large portion of Stelco's boundaries lay on water. It did not take long before Stelco started moving both men and supplies across the Bay from Burlington. The union needed a boat that could harass the company boats and hopefully disrupt their supply line. On July 20th the union's navy was born with the purchase of a motor launch they renamed the "WHISPER". The "WHISPER" was bought from a Hamilton bootlegger who used it to outrun the authorities. It was by far the fastest boat on the harbour, capable of 40 miles an hour. The stories of Whispers' tireless work are legendary as Jake Isbister remembers... "Some of the scabs used to row back and forth across the bay... we'd get wind of something like that, so we'd come roaring up on the "Whisper" & what we'd do is throw the wheel hard over, and the wash from the "Whisper" would just, well, it would just engulf them, you know what I mean". With photo of Nora Henderson inside plant with scabs. Check out the scans.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 4to.
