Very Good - The book is bound in later calf with gilt fillet border, gilt arms of W. Boyne, Leeds, 1850, to the upper board, spine is re-backed in calf divided into six compartments by gilt edged raised bands, lettering pieces gilt on pink leather label in compartment two. Joints are creased with some wear but not tender, inner hinges are sound; spine in good un-worn condition; boards rubbed and scratched, beat repairs to corners. the original dark blue cloth covered boards, illustration and lettering pieces in gilt to the upper board and spine. The book contains 15 leaves of folding engraved plate, all bound together at the rear. Minor spotting and brown blemishes to some plate margins and blank half; a couple of marginal handling marks just clipping the illustration to the final plate otherwise all illustrations are clean. Spotting and brown blemishes to letterpress leaves, mostly minor and marginal, more pronounced and widespread chiefly to opening and closing leaves. Ink inscription dated 1753 to the front paste down, with slight abrasion obscuring part. Pages are lumpy throughout and creased at times. All pages tightly held. By Laurentio Patarol Lorenzo Patarol was born in Venice to Francesco Patarol and Laura Businello and was educated at the Somaschi school in Murano. His scholarly output exemplifies the polymathy typical of the Venetian heyday of curiosity (Pomian 1990: 65-120). His major works include the following: 1. Series Augustorum (1702), a series of brief biographies of European rulers and their immediate families, from Julius Caesar to Patarols own day. 2. Panegyrica (1708), an edition of the fourth-century Panegyrici Latini, accompanied by the first complete Italian translation of the text. 3. Bombyces (1743), a three-book poem on the silkmoth in Latin hexameters, with extensive notes.
