About This Item

London: M. Lewis No.1 Pater-Noster-Row, 1770. Book. Good. No Binding. 1st Edition. Mary Lewis, Moravian and Independent, was a bookseller/printer in business with her husband, son-in-law, and daughter at 1 Paternoster Row, 1756-91. Upon the death of her husband, John Lewis, in 1754, Mary Lewis took over his printing business and bookshop at 1 Paternoster Row, only a short distance from Joseph Johnson's bookshop in St. Paul's Courtyard. Though Ian Maxted describes her as 'Printer to the Moravians' (she was the exclusive London publisher of the works of the Moravian evangelist, John Cennick), Lewis was more likely a Calvinistic Methodist and later an Independent, her evangelical Calvinism being shared by her Particular Baptist friends, Joseph and Martha Gurney. Joseph collaborated with Mary Lewis on several publications in the 1760s and '70s, including the popular Gospel Magazine. This issue, #52, April, 1790. 1st/1st, nice condition . Interesting content, including poetry, divine allegories, biographies, parables explained, much more. Woodcut ornaments. 56pp. The Gospel Magazine is a Calvinist, Evangelical Christian magazine from the United Kingdom, and is one of the longest running of such periodicals, having been founded in 1766. Most of the editors have been Anglicans. It is currently published bi-monthly. Articles this issue include: The Experience of a True Christi; Copy of a Letter Late Sent to a Lady; etc. The Gospel-magazine, or Spiritual Library is designed to promote scriptural religion Light toning and brown spotting, trace wear. Approaches FINE cond. Approx. 5 x 8". 56pp. .
