1798 Manuscript Ordinance Town of Oyster Bay Long Island New York

1798. Eighteenth-century manuscript ordinance dated August 18, 1798 from Col. Wortman Sup'r "Notice is hereby given that all persons are hereby Strictly forbid Cutting or Carrying away any Grass or hay from the Meadow or Marshes Claimed by the town of Oysterbay vefore the 10th Day of September next on the pain & penalty that may fall thereon by Virtue of a Town law passed at the annual Town Meeting held at Norwich on the first Tesday in April Last affecting the Same- by Col. Wortman Sup'r Dated August 18 1798" 12 1/2" x 7 3/4" approximate size; with the names of Thomas Smith, John Wright, Joseph Latting, John Wright (2nd time) John Casham Jun. (Committee) below; all accomplished in the same legible hand in dark brown ink, chain-laid "GR" watermark paper; back of note states in contemporary hand "Coppy (sic) of Oyster Bay Advertisement"; Oyster Bay local historical figures of note, especially John Wright family given extensive mention in Mather's opus genealogical work, "The Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut", also, a Nicholas Wortman noted as a member of Capt. William Ludlum's 10th Company of Militia, in Col. Josiah Smith's Regiment, in Queens County, of which Oyster Bay was then a portion Latting family gave their name to Lattingtown in the same area; light edge, tips wear and darkening to leaf, a few small holes, old repair on fold line on back; very good condition and interesting..
