Probably written by Henry Markell (1791-1832) of Montgomery County, NY. Addressed to the Gould firm, Markell writes: " Gent. I went to Herkimer last week to see Mr. Goff respecting your demand and after making inquiries respecting his situation & prospects &c., I concluded it would be the best thing I could do for you to accept the offer he made, to wit to receive the books he had of you together with an old edition of Bacon's Abridgment & Foster's Crown Law, from him & discharge the judgment in full -- I attempted to make him pay the costs & take the books for your demand only, but he utterly refused to do any thing until I would take them in satisfaction of Debt & Costs. He would not even pay the Sheriffs fees on ca-sa [?]. I brought them with me & hold them subject to your order -- they are soiled some but not otherwise injured materially -- Mr. Fox an atty of this neighborhood wishes to purchase a library & after getting the best offer from him I can, I will submit the same to you, for your advice & instructions on the subject." Good, light wear, plus a 2 x 1 inch rectangular portion missing from top edge. Seems to be written from Palatine NY and that would make sense in terms of Herkimer and what we know from research online about where Henry Markell resided. Gould published and sold law books primarily and was in business at least until the 1880s.
