Streeter, Texas 878. OCLC shows four holdings (U. Penn.; Yale; Baylor & BYU-Provo). Decree of the Congreso General, approved by José Justo Corro, president ad interim, May 2, 1836, and promulgated the same day by José Maria Tornel, authorizing the employment of Captain D. José Martinez and his crew to aid in ending the Texan war and stopping the entry of contraband. Martinez was a Spanish naval commander of the Mar del Sur force. After definitive defeats against the united troops of Colombia and Peru in 1824, Martinez surrendered two ships to the Mexican government on April 28 of 1828 in the port of Monterey, located in California. He surrendered the ships Asia and Constante to the Mexican Governor and Military Commander; he promised to hand over the ships to the government as long as the latter obliged to pay them overdue wages and allowed the crew their freedom in the event that any of them wished to return to Spain. Those who decided to remain in Mexico would recognize their independence and swear allegiance. By 1836, the name of José Martinez was once again mentioned while on the search of capable Captains that could face the naval forces of the Texans and that could effectively carry out a Naval blockade that could cut the supplies of the Texans.Reviews
