About This Item
Leipzig: Jul. Heinr. Zimmermann [PNs Z. 3237-3238], 1900. Balakirev, Mily 1837-1910. Two volumes. Small folio. Original publisher's dark ivory wrappers with titling within decorative lithographic border by F.M. Geidel in dark green. 11, [1] (blank) pp. each. Publisher's catalogue to verso of lower wrapper.
Printed dedication to head of title: "A Madame Nadine Tanéiew."
From the collection of pianist Mario Feninger (1923-2016), with his stylized initials to head of title.
Wrappers slightly worn; "Made in Germany" handstamped to lower margin of uppers. First Edition of this transcription.
"Of his three symphonies, the first was admired by Glazunov; the second showed the influence of Balakirev; and the third is more eclectic. His operas were performed because of his powerful influence in high circles and are of little account. His lighter orchestral works, songs and piano pieces, two of which Balakirev arranged for publication, are pleasant and unassuming." Edward Garden in Grove Music Online.
"Balakirev was a crucial figure in Russian music. He extended and developed the fusion which Glinka had accomplished between on the one hand the common-practice music of his day and on the other some musical elements of Russian character and others of a boldly experimental nature. Balakirev established patterns which could be used to express overtly national feeling in music. In his own compositions he demonstrated how this could be done, laying the basis for a rich repertory spanning all the contemporary genres." Stuart Campbell in Grove Music Online.
