About This Item
New York: Union for Democratic Action, 1946. A group of publications from the UDA, mostly 8.5x11 inches, many with the year added in pencil in a corner, otherwise generally very good. Includes seven issues of the UDA Bulletin, many undated, from between 1941 and 1946; vol. 1 nos. 2 and 4 of the UDA Research Letter from 1941; a May 1, 1944 issue of What's Doing in the UDA; nine issues of the UDA Congressional Newsletter from 1943 to 1946; two press releases, one of them condemning the Minneapolis Trial of Socialist Workers Party activists, and various additional mailings. Headed by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, formerly of the Socialist Party, the UDA was the precursor organization to Americans for Democratic Action. It advocated the preservation and extension of liberal democracy, including support for US involvement to buttress anti-fascist forces in Europe before the US joined WWII. Topics covered in these newsletters include labor rights, racial equality including a demand to abolish military segregation, and support for postwar employment plans. The Congressional Newsletter closely tracks pending legislation.
