Joints show some slight cracks; front hinge cracked but there has been some repair, so binding fairly solid. Front pastedown with reproduction of an engraved portrait of Priestley laid down; 2nd free endpaper with reproduction of a statue of Priestley laid down; title page with ornate decoration in ink top and bottom borders by previous owner; p. 202 and facing blank with tipped-in Daily News, 1911 newsprint article on the Russells of Birmingham, mentioning the burning down of Priestley's house. Offset tanning from newsprint p. 202; some margin notes, in pencil. Strips of paper and a catalog entry for a two page letter from Priestly, pasted down on verso of frontis with notes from prior owner/collector with a note and signature in a neat calligraphic hand. "Purchased autograph letter as described above and presented it to the Library of Renshaw, Unitarian Chapel; Feb. 2nd 1899; Strips trimmed off the letter." Signed, but at this time we haven't been able to identify the prior owner. ; Half-leather and marbled paper over boards ruled in gilt; black lether spine label lettered in gilt; 1809 in gilt bottom of the spine; marbled endpapers. Together with: Priestley. LETTERS to the RIGHT HONOURABLE EDMUND BURKE, Occasioned by his Reflections on the Revolution in France &c. Birmingham Printed; New-York; Re-printed by Hugh Gaine, 1791. Third Edition, corrected. 8vo; vi, 73 [1] pp. ; Modern paper boards with paper label. Moderate foxing/spotting. The first American edition printed by the Irish immigrant printer Hugh Gaine. (from a typed catalog citation laid down on front endpaper). THE USE OF CHRISTIANITY, Especially in difficult Times, A Sermon Delivered at The Gravel Pit Meeting in Hackney. March 30th 1794. Being the Author's Farewell Discourse to His Congregation. Bound in modern orange wrappers with typed paper title label, library cloth tape spine. Ink name & date top margin of title page, short pencil note bottom margin. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; (i)-iv, 202 pages; Joseph Priestley, (1733 –1804) was an English chemist, natural philosopher, separatist theologian, grammarian, multi-subject educator, and liberal political theorist who published over 150 works. He has historically been credited with the independent discovery of oxygen. His outspoken support of the French Revolution aroused public and governmental suspicion; he was eventually forced to flee in 1791, first to London and then to the United States after a mob burned down his home and church. He spent the last ten years of his life living in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. .
