Wise on October 16, 1856 commissioned David SMith Walton as major to command a new volunteer military organization in Norfolk County demonimated as the first battalion, 3rd Regiments of VIrginia Volunteers. On the eve of Secession in 1861, the 3rd Regiments of Virginia Volunteers served as the foundation of what was to become the 3rd Virginia Infantry.
