Nearly four hundred competitors from twenty countries competed in the 54th Hastings International Chess Congress. There was a new sponsor, International Computers Limited. The International Chess Grandmasters Tournament had a fifteen player tournament and so each player had a bye at some point during the proceedings. The tournament consisted of eight grandmasters, five international master and two as yet untitled players. The Soviet pair, Alexander Kochiev and Evgeni Vasyukov were both making their first Hastings appearance. The winner of the tournament Ulf Andersson arrived after winning a post olympid tournament in Argentina. Of the three Americans two had the grandmaster title, Larry Christiansen and Anatoly Lein, the third was John Peters. Istvan Csom was making his second visit to this tournament. One of the newest grandmasters to compete in the tournament was Mihail Suba of Romania. Peter Biyiasas of Canada also received his grandmaster title at the last FIDE congress. All five of the home players were international masters. Bill Hartson, Jonathan Mestel, George Botterill and wo of the authors Jonahan Speelman and Shuan Talbut. The other player who was untitled, other than John Peters. was Al Balshan of Isreal. Condition: Some edge wear else a very good copy.
