Denys Thierry, Claude Barbin et Pierre Trabouillet, Paris, 1697. Second edition. Eight volumes, 12mo (156 x 91mm). 30 engraved illustrations by Sauvé after Brissart, woodcut initials and ornaments (occasional light offsetting). 19th-century red morocco by Duru and Chambolle, edges gilt. The second edition of the illustrated collected works of France's greatest playwright by Thierry, Barbin, and Trabouillet. Molière? S sharp and bravura sense of humor, which encompasses the whole scope of human life, earned him the favor of Louis XIV? And the approbation of the Catholic church. This edition reproduces Thierry's 1682 illustrated edition, which was the first to print the text of his Don Juan [engraving included] A play attacking hypocrites which was quickly suspended, requiring him to censor the final lines even in print. Tchemerzine IV, 826-827; Guibert, II, p. 629-658; Pléiade, I, CXVIII-CXXV. Condition crisp and Near Fine. Barely rubbed. Gilt very bright. Interiors with light ageing but crisp with minimal foxing. End papers with gold filigreed edges. Contemporary book dealers note tipped in. 6.5" x 4". .
