About This Item
Paris: Editions du Jardin des Modes, 1934. First (?). Illustrated paper-covered boards. Good-. This is considered one of the scarcest Babar titles, published after the first three Babar books, and presented as a basic alphabet book for young children. I appears to compare favorably with other available 1st editions, but not being expert in children's books, I am not able to guarantee it is a true first. It is therefore priced accordingly.
However, what certain is that this particular copy is from the personal library of Maurice Sendak, the famous American children's author, who died in 2012. Sendak, who did not typically identify his books with bookplates or signatures, bequeathed many of the books to the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia. The Museum subsequently identified a number of books that it decided to sell. This set is accompanied by a certification from the auctioneer to attest that it was sold on behalf of the Rosenbach Museum, thereby confirming the Sendak provenance.
The book's condition is good-, in colorful illustrated paper board and color illustrations throughout. Unfortunately the paper on the spine has deteriorated with use and age. The binding is still sound however, and the rest of the book is unmarked and undamaged, except for minor scuffing and soiling on the covers. AS.
