[From Inside front cover] Through a selection of over three hundred works. ABCD - Art Brut Connaissance & Diffusion - presents a part of the collection assembled by Bruno Decharme, which brings together the most important creators of Art Brut from the end of the 19th century to date. Art Brut is an unprecedented artistic phenomenon, which cannot be connected to the Avant-Garde or to any other artistic or aesthetic school of art. Art Brut was first signaled by the psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn and then brought to life under the auspices of Michel Tapié, André Breton and Jean Dubuffet. Dubuffet defined its meaning and Michel Thévoz developed its principles. Art Brut has its own special place and is certainly one of the greatest discoveries in the world of art. Art Brut challenges us to think about the "Other". It is the end result of uncontrollable needs as they appear in the works produced by people who are not part of established cultural systems. The purpose of this book, divided into three parts, is to show the richness and complexity of Art Brut. The first part of the book invites us to observe the works of eighty different artists and to discover their personal worlds, sometimes unusual and disturbing, always fascinating by the enigmas they reveal. The second part, "The Biographies", describes the colorful and at times troubled lives of these "everyday" but extraordinary men and women. Their fruitful though obscure lives hide behind explosive artistic imagination. The third part, "The Journal" contains various analytical essays written by art historians, authors, philosophers, psychiatrists and psychoanalysts who approach Art Brut through different perspectives.
