About This Item
San Francisco: Adam Smart and Company, 1936. Paperback. Very good overall. A sweet illustrated, signed presentation copy of rhyming children's book by Alfred Sutro a.k.a. Adam Smart. Sutro (1869-1945), was a prominent San Francisco attorney, well-known book collector, and President of the Book Club of California.
The charming illustrations are printed in a single color with the animals and scenery defined sometimes by the color, and also by the absence of color. It includes one of a kangaroo "Kangaroo," cried Missus Kangie, "Please cast off that painful grouch, All our baby kangaroosies Now are snuggled in my pouch." Other animals include bees, an owl, elephants, goats, tigers, and sheep.
The inscription to Smart's grandchild reads- "For Grandmother Marie Wright to entertain her grandchild with the very cordial greetings of grandfather Alfred Sutro (Adam Smart) San Francisco, March 1, 1938". 4to (9.5 x 12.5"), 31 unpaginated pages, illustrated by Ralph Berry in vivid monotone color. Original cream paper wrapper with blue illustration of animals surrounding the title, string tie binding. Wrapper slt. ruffled at top edge, internally clean and bright. OCLC: 15034777 records 4 copies. Not found on Trove.
